Luego, en la era de los Commodore, tenia un Atari 400 con la gran friolera de 16K. Aprendi a programar basic con un viejo libro que consegui en una tienda de discos que liquidaba mercancia en Bayamon Oeste. Me lo dieron de gratis porque parece que era del hijo del due/no que se habia ido a estudiar fuera de Puerto Rico. Personalmente mi calculadora es una vieja Casio fx-4000p, donde programaba, resolvia ecuaciones lineales y escribia codigo sencillo. Como hace formulas con parentesis es buena para ecuaciones complicadas y es facil de corregir. Obviamente, como el mundo de ingenieria es dominado por las hewlett packard, el unico que sabe operarla bien soy yo. Es una calculadora temperamental, a veces da la ultima cifra decimal mal si no estas pendiente, pero la he tenido desde 1988. Mi primera calculadora Casio fx 4000p murio en el 1992. Compre una identica como regalo de bodas y todavia la conservo, con el estuche modificado y tras varios cambios de pila. Algo de la calculadora aqui:

Anyway, la gran realidad es que todos estos computos ya se hacen en hojas electronicas como excel o quattropro. O como matlab. Cierro con un viral que me enviaron por email hoy sobre el tema de ondas usando pendulos:

Primero algo bien basico de ondas. Las ondas en un pendulo son que si sueltas un pendulo a un angulo x tendra un tiempo fijo de traslacion dado por el largo de la soga y la gravedad que se ejerce contra el objeto. Es independiente de la masa o el angulo que desplaza. Por eso se usan tanto para los mecanismos de relojes.. Un intenso debate surgio en mi oficina relacionado a las fuerzas adicionales que ejerce el efecto gravitacional en el pendulo, pero eso es otra historia.

Comments: Our apparatus was built from a design published by Richard Berg ¹ at the University of Maryland. He claims their version is copied from one at Moscow State University. James Flaten and Kevin Parendo² have mathematically modeled the collective motions of the pendula with a continuous function. The function does not cycle in time and they show that the various patterns arise from aliasing of this function—the patterns are a manifestation of spatial aliasing (as opposed to temporal). Indeed, if you've ever used a digital scope to observe a sinusoidal signal, you have probably seen some of these patterns on the screen when the time scale was not set appropriately.

How it works: The period of one complete cycle of the dance is 60 seconds. The length of the longest pendulum has been adjusted so that it executes 51 oscillations in this 60 second period. The length of each successive shorter pendulum is carefully adjusted so that it executes one additional oscillation in this period. Thus, the 15th pendulum (shortest) undergoes 65 oscillations. When all 15 pendulums are started together, they quickly fall out of sync—their relative phases continuously change because of their different periods of oscillation. However, after 60 seconds they will all have executed an integral number of oscillations and be back in sync again at that instant, ready to repeat the dance.

Setting it up: The pendulum waves are best viewed from above or down the length of the apparatus. Video projection is a must for a large lecture hall audience. One instance of interest to note is at 30 seconds (halfway through the cycle), when half of the pendulums are at one amplitude maximum and the other half are at the opposite amplitude maximum.

Otro fin de semana mas. Buscando nuevas experiencias me dio con buscar en las librerias del area de Rio Piedras. Entre otras cosas en Econolibros consegui muchos ~~vejestorios~~ antiguedades llenas de polvo incluyendo entre otras cosas portaminas de 2 mm de diametro (un lapiz mecanico es tipicamente entre 0.5 - 0.7 mm), cartabones y transportadores de maestros y mas que nada como 5 cajas llenas de slide rules de estudiante a 1.50 cada uno.

Interesante para jugar con ellos un rato. Es mas por el valor arquelogico como ingeniero. No llegue a usar slide rules, pero llegue a usar la de mi papa, antes de las primeras calculadoras TI. Tambien encontre un texto de dise/no de ductos de ventilacion y aire acondicionado para incluir entre mis referencias. El libro que buscaba evidentemente no lo consegui. La eliminacion del Borders demostro lo malo de las megacadenas. Venden todo a precio de rajatabla para eliminar la competencia y cuando se van dejan un hoyo negro.

Libreria Magica y La Tertulia tienen excelentes libros. Si y solo si te interesa la literatura erudita y rebuscada. Leo para entretenerme, para despejarme la mente. No todos los dias quiero procesar un Bioy Caseres o un Borges. Borders me daba opciones idiotizantes y me traia mucho comic import, hueco que Metro Comics et al no pueden llenar. Visual Arts Bookstore, la otra alterna cerro, en gran parte por la distribucion masiva de las animaciones japonesas.

Un sitio que me llamo mucho la atencion por el potencial que tiene fue el local de Electroshock, una tienda de trrueque de articulos de segunda mano que presenta la sustentabilidad en accion. El modelo, saca lo que no usas, si nos gusta te lo compramos y revendemos. Aplica para ropa y para articulos. Como una persona que tiene todo un balcon lleno de chatarras interesantes (libros esotericos, curiosidades, discos viejos, consolas viejas, etc.) mas de la ex que mios es cada dia mas tentador llevarlos alla para que los cotizaran. Win - Win.

Si estás loc@ por salir de un montón de ropa, accesorios, patines, libros, reusar, contribuir al medioambiente y además ganarte un dinero extra, date la vuelta por Electroshock, la nueva tienda de intercambio, compra y venta en el casco de Río Piedras.
El local está ubicado en la Avenida Ponce de León, a unos pasos de la estación del Tren Urbano y la Universidad de Puerto Rico, en la acera contraria de la librería La Tertulia, en el mismo medio de la movida gastronómica y cultural de Río Piedras. El concepto de la tienda es idea de Kristen Michelle, una empresaria boricua de 26 años que ya tiene experiencia con varios negocios en el área, como Printing Boutique y un desaparecido café riopedrense.
Sus negocios tienen un sello auténtico, con decoración, música y atmósfera que sugiere un estilo de vida artístico, relajado y liberal.
Hace apenas un mes, Kristen se asoció a su amiga Mónica Oquendo y su novio Javier Garrote y llevaron a un local, lo que por mucho tiempo hacían en el cuarto de su casa, tipo “Garage Sale”.

“Aquí nada pasa de los $15”, comentó Kristen sobre su nuevo negocio, donde intercambian, compran y venden ropa, joyería, sombreros, zapatos, muebles, bicis, cámaras. Según explicó, apenas cuentan con cuatro o cinco artículos de $30 o $35, que son piezas valoradas en los $200, pero para su clientela han decidido tener precios razonables.
En un espacio sencillo y sin aire acondicionado, puedes pasar un buen rato buscando entre los estantes de ropa cualquier sorpresa: t-shirts de los 90, 80, 70, ropa ‘vintage’ en buen estado, tacos de alfiler, carteras ‘hippies’ o de abuela, ropa playera, patines, espejos, disfraces.

Usualmente, la ropa se le compra a las personas a $5 la libra, e individualmente podría ser entre $1.50 a $4. Por los zapatos y carteras, Electroshock podría pagar entre $3 a $5, dependiendo su estado y si es de alguna marca reconocida. También se aceptan antigüedades, discos y consolas de juego electrónico como el Súper Nintendo, entre otros.

Rivera agregó que algunos discos que les interesan son los de salsa del Gran Combo, Rafael Cortijo e Ismael Rivera. Igualmente, la música rock & roll, gospel y principalmente todo lo de la década de los 70 y 80. Del mismo modo, los libros de arte, agricultura, literatura, fotografía y novelas de autores reconocidos son bien recibidos.

Por su parte, Ramírez, quién estudió producción de televisión en la Universidad del Sagrado Corazón (USC), manifestó que "nosotros queríamos hacerlo en uno de los cuartos de una de nuestras casas y decirle a nuestros amigos que fueran para hacer los intercambios de ropa, pero decidimos mejor hacer una tienda".

Explicó Ramírez que con la buena acogida por parte de la clientela se le ha llenado la tienda, por lo que ahora son más selectivos con los artículos a comprar y vender, dándole prioridad a los raros. Debido a esto, la tienda se encuentra en una etapa de remodelación que esperan esté finalizada para la semana próxima.
Indicó que los artículos que no ponen a la venta en la tienda están siendo donados a la Fondita de Jesús y a un proyecto del Municipio de San Juan para los ex confinados.

Ramírez narró que en Europa es más común que la gente compre artículos de segunda mano a que lo obtengan nuevo, entre otros paises, España y Holanda. También en Estados Unidos hay tiendas parecidas normalmente llamadas thrift store localizadas en Nueva York, California y Florida. Sostuvo que al tener la experiencia de visitar estos lugares fuera de Puerto Rico, siempre se cuestionaba el porqué no lo había aquí.

Este fin de semana de San Sebastian lo pase en familia. No me arrepiento. Uno de los hobbies que he tomado ultimamente es ense/narle a mi hijo curiosidades de la internet y como puede ser una opotunidad de aprendizaje sumamente divertida. El articulo de hoy fue sugerido inicialmente con una investigacion sobre motion comics y novelas graficas.

A sibling format to motion comics called illustrated films was developed by transmedia studio HALO 8 Entertainment with their Godkiller, which was produced at the same time as (but separately from) the Watchmen motion comic. As opposed to repurposing an existing comic book, Halo-8 created new sequential art that was designed from its inception to be transmedia art for both a comic book and an illustrated film. Godkiller creator Matt Pizzolo told Bloody Disgusting "Godkiller was just a slower production than Watchmen because we had to create 200 pages of art and story from the ground up first, rather than starting with one of the greatest comic books ever made as source material. Plus we had a dozen voice performers instead of just one."^[6]
Although aesthetically similar to motion comics, Pizzolo identifies illustrated film influences as including Liquid Television, the MTV cartoon adaptation of The Maxx, the Berserk anime series, Chris Marker's La jetée, the motion comic Broken Saints, and the experimental cinema of Ralph Bakshi.^[7]^[8]
According to Comics Alliance, Pizzolo stated "the difference between an illustrated film and a motion comic is kind of the difference between a movie that was shot in 3D versus a movie that was shot in 2D but got a 3D post-conversion. We're not repurposing an existing comic book here, we're building something unique from scratch."^[9]

The Book: The noodle soup called pho is the national dish of Vietnam. When Little Blue - having been dropped by a mysterious man with a red car and being told to count to 500 - finds himself in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam's baffling, daunting capital,his salvation is his own mobile pho stand. Little Blue's relationship with the city and its food brings an understanding to what it means to never want to return home and the fact that everyone goes away in the end.

Me he podido identificar con algunas de las situaciones presentadas en la historia (por lo menos la version interactiva, no creo conseguir la version original localmente en buen tiempo).

It takes a certain kind of graphic novel to cross over into the mainstream provided by publishers like Jonathan Cape. It can be nostalgiac and mordant, like, say, Seth’s recent George Sprott. It can emerge from the pen of one of the legends (like, say, Daniel Clowes whose recent Wilson we were so enamoured with). It can be political (like Joe Sacco’s Footnotes in Gaza), travelogue-y (like Guy Delisle’s ongoing work) or it can be memoir-y (like Alison Bechdel’s Funhome). It shouldn’t really be super hero-y (although Chris Ware can make that happen). And, occasionally, it may sacrifice narrative on the altar of art (see David Hughes’ Walking the Dog). As charming as Julian Hanshaw’s The Art of Pho is, it still tends to fall into that latter camp.
Little Blue is a small, childlike creature with an open-ended funnel for a nose who is left besides the road somewhere Vietnam-y by a man in a red car. Asked to stand and count to 500, a small community springs up around him that eventually gives him succour, with a roadside stand selling Pho. What is Pho when it’s at home, you may cry if you haven’t been to Vietnam yourself. Well, Pho is a kind of broth boiled up from beef bones and consisting of noodles and spring onions and chilli and coriander in hundreds of different ways (we learn that a bowl of Pho will taste particular and individual to whoever is selling it). Little Blue takes up residence with a group of travellers (all of whom are themselves selling Pho somewhere in the city) and gradually builds up a small coterie of regular customers – one of whom eventually invites Little Blue to cook for her at her home many miles away. This journey appears to presage some sort of crisis in which Little Blue learns something of his origins…

In Martin Scorsese's film The Last Temptation of Christ, based on the novel by Nikos Kazantzakis, Judas Iscariot's only motivation in betraying Jesus to the Romans was to help him, making Judas the catalyst for the event later interpreted as bringing about humanity's salvation. This view of Judas Iscariot is reflected in the recently discovered Gospel of Judas. The film King of Kings presents a similar betrayal.

In Andrew Lloyd Webber's musical Jesus Christ Superstar, Judas is portrayed as a tragic hero who believed that Jesus was not the son of God, but rather just a man. Since he feared that if Jesus' following grew too large then the Romans would attack and kill the Jews, he betrayed Jesus to Caiaphas and Annas to prevent a bloodbath.

One of the most outstanding aspects of Last Temptation is the incredible score composed by Peter Gabriel. It combines indigenous music from the Middle East and North Africa with folk music and some rock sounds, often with a driving "primitive" drum beat to create a unique, ethereal sound. Even if you have reservations about seeing the movie, check out the soundtrack. It may be listed under New Age music in some stores.

Although I can understand why some Christians may have difficulty with some of the images of Christ, The Last Temptation of Christ is hardly blasphemous in spirit. The main forces behind its creation come from an eclectic Christian background--Scorsese is Roman Catholic, screenwriter Paul Schrader is Dutch Calvinist, and novelist Nikos Kazantzakis is Greek Orthodox--and they have blended their backgrounds to make a film geared towards western audiences.

First of all, Judas in this canon is certainly not the Judas of the New Testament. He is not depicted as evil or a traitor. Judas was merely acting under orders because he was the strongest disciple (see "Before its Time?" above). Judas was a religious zealot who, at first was sent to kill Jesus. He accepted his teachings instead and somewhat reluctantly became a follower. At first he was disgusted by Jesus making crosses for those who oppress them. Although he began to trust Jesus and see him as the son of God. Judas seemed to understand Jesus the most and was by far the most commited disciple to the cause. With a tendency to fight more than love, Jesus and he contrasted each other.

What made Judas's character so controversial was that some viewers considered him more wise and brave than Jesus. He is considered a stronger character to some because he confronts Jesus after Christ is shown as an old man, not having died for the sins of the Jews (see "Temptation of Jesus"). Judas has done his part, although Christ wavered and did not die as planned by God. Although this did not eventually happen, it is an intriguing point referring the character of Judas himself.

Nor is it only the portrayal of Jesus himself that is antithetical to Christian thought. Virtually every characterization, every aspect of the film is deliberately iconoclastic, self-consciously contrary to traditional Christian understanding, calculated for shock value. First and foremost is the reinterpretation of Judas Iscariot (Harvey Keitel) as a principled hero, a man who ultimately "betrays" Jesus only because Jesus orders him to do so over Judas’ own tortured objections. When faithful Judas demands to know whether if Jesus himself, were he in Judas’ place, would be able to betray a beloved master, Jesus replies (in a moment typical of the film’s sensibilities), "No, I couldn’t. That’s why God gave me the easier job [i.e., dying on the cross]."
Throughout the movie Judas acts almost as Jesus’ conscience. As the film opens we find Judas patriotically upbraiding Jesus for collaborating with Rome by his cross-making. When Jesus begins his ministry, Judas follows him conditionally, warning him that if he betrays his mission Judas will kill him. Finally, in the climactic scene, it is a stern, prophetic Judas (or a dream-representation of him) that recalls Jesus to the necessity of his dying on the cross.
Once again, there’s nothing wrong with trying to humanize Judas to an extent, or give him understandable motivations. The filmmaker can even make us empathize with him to the point of feeling that we too would be capable of doing what he did. But what he did, in the end, has to be wrong; and Keitel’s Judas never manifests anything like corruption, self-interest, or pettiness. Jesus is the main character and protagonist here, but a case could be made that Judas is the film’s true hero, or at least its most idealized character.

He went on to suggest that the book's publicity derives from an insatiable desire for conspiracy theories:

We are instantly fascinated by the suggestion of conspiracies and cover-ups; this has become so much the stuff of our imagination these days that it is only natural, it seems, to expect it when we turn to ancient texts, especially biblical texts. We treat them as if they were unconvincing press releases from some official source, whose intention is to conceal the real story; and that real story waits for the intrepid investigator to uncover it and share it with the waiting world. Anything that looks like the official version is automatically suspect.

Later the same year, Biblical scholar Louis Painchaud argued that the text suggests Judas was actually possessed by a demon.^[28]

The video portrays Jesus and his disciples as a biker gang riding around with skull-and-bone insignias on their backs (nice touch). Gaga is riding with Jesus, playing the role of Mary Magdalene.
Although it is not clearly specified in the Bible, Mary Magdalene is said to be the prostitute who was about to get stoned to death by an angry mob until Jesus came along and said: “Y’all country-ass, donkey-riding peasants better drop them rocks and go on home before things get REAL ugly up in here”. Wait, that’s what Samuel L. Jackson would have said. Jesus actually said: “Let he who is without sin cast the first stone”.
At the very end of Judas, Gaga is seen stoned to death, insinuating that Jesus was not there to save her.

Gaga as Mary Magdalene stoned to death. In Judas, Jesus has failed to save Gaga. Also, does this scene portray Gaga being persecuted by people who are offended by her music?

So Gaga plays the role of Mary Magdalene where Magdalene is not only the friend and disciple of Jesus, but his lover. This portrayal of Mary Magdalene as Jesus’ mate became popular in the past few decades with books such as The Jesus Scroll (1972), Holy Blood, Holy Grail (1982), The Gospel According to Jesus Christ (1991), The Da Vinci Code (2003), The Two Marys: The Hidden History of the Mother and Wife of Jesus (2007); and by films like Bloodline (2008). These alternative accounts on Jesus Christ’s life originate from modern interpretations of Gnostic and apocryphal texts (mainly the Nag Hammadi) where Magdalene is described as Jesus’ “favorite disciple” and “companion”. An interpretation of the apocryphal Gospel of Philip even alludes to Jesus “often kissing Mary Magdalene on the lips”.

Some occult circles believe that Jesus lived well beyond the age of 33 (a number they believed was selected for symbolic reasons). Some claim that Jesus married Mary Magdalene with whom he had a daughter named Sarah. Some even claimed that they moved to Southern France, where they started the fabled Merovingian Bloodline.

Judas therefore portrays Mary Magdalene from this angle, where Gaga is the wife of Jesus. However, she only has eyes for Judas.

A long-lost version of The Hobbit by animation legend Gene Deitch has resurfaced online in the past few days. Why did Gene produce this 12-minute “animatic” version instead of the feature-length version he’d originally planned with Jiří Trnka? Why did he have just one month to produce it? Why has nobody ever seen it? The crazy circumstances that led to the production are revealed in this piece that Gene wrote on his website. In short, the film was a financial ploy by Deitch’s producer William L. Snyder to earn himself a nice chunk of change.

knew my screen story line by heart, so I just had to put it through a mind-shredder, and wrote a sort of synopsis, with a few key lines of dialog scattered throughout. I called on close friend, brilliant Czech illustrator, Adolf Born, well known even then, and now the premier book illustrator. We managed to work out a simple storyboard. Adolf came up with a paper cutout scheme, and I worked out some multiple-exposure visual effects and scene continuity. We worked directly under the camera to shoot it. I got an American friend here, Herb Lass, who worked as a broadcaster for the Czechoslovak Radio’s English language transmissions, to come up to our apartment and record the narration. I borrowed a tape of dramatic movie music from a composer friend, Václav Lidl, which I quickly extracted and cut together, also at home. It was no problem with music rights, as I could assure him that the film would never actually be distributed, but would be – sadly – a mere decoy.

I love to see my name as director on the screen credits of my films, but I modestly refrained this time. I did not want my name on such a chopped down version of my script, even though, thanks to Born, the film looked amazingly good.

We actually managed to get it shot and out of the lab in time, (without bribes, but with Zdenka’s usual brand of irresistable-object techniques), and I arranged for my New York air ticket. I arrived with the rough answer print on June 29th. Snyder had already booked a small projection room in midtown Manhattan. After a quick test screening – and Snyder was duly impressed – I ran downstairs and stopped people on the sidewalk, asking them if they would like to see a preview of a new animated film, for only 10¢ admission. I handed each willing customer a dime, which they handed back. After the screening, the few, puzzled audience members were asked to sign a paper stating that on this day of June 31, 1966, they had paid admission to see the full-color animated film, “THE HOBBIT!”

Thus Snyder’s film rights to the entire J.R.R. Tolkien library were legally extended, and he was immediately able to sell them back for nearly $100,000. (Remember, this was 1966). My share of this weazled boodle was – you guessed it – zip.

You've probably never heard of Gene Deitch, but you were likely exposed to his work at a young age. The American illustrator based in Prague produced episodes for the "Tom and Jerry" and "Popeye" throughout the 60s, during a time where the productions were being partially outsourced to Prague. Deitch's films for the series have been called the worst of the lot, but Deitch attributes that to his Czech style, which "had nothing in common with these gag-driven cartoons."

Going through old links this morning, I found a story originally published in New York Magazine back in 2009 about the waters of New York City—a maritime metropolis that, many forget, is also an archipelago.

"What, exactly, is down there?" the magazine asked, looking out at the urban waters. "For starters, a 350-foot steamship, 1,600 bars of silver, a freight train, and four-foot-long cement-eating worms." There are also the now submerged ruins of "Coney Island’s great early theme parks," discarded in the waters after the fun ran out.

28. The Last Remnants of Dreamland
One of Coney Island’s great early theme parks, Dreamland existed for only a few years before it burned down in 1911. Nothing survives of it aboveground, but a group that Speregen co-founded, called Cultural Research Divers, found the lampposts underwater, melted and deformed from the fire.

On the night before opening day [for the 2011 season], a concession called Hell Gate, in which visitors took a boat ride on rushing waters through dim caverns, was undergoing last-minute repairs by a roofing company owned by Samuel Engelstein. A leak had to be caulked with tar. During these repairs, at about 1:30 in the morning on Saturday, May 27, 1911, the light bulbs that illuminated the operations began to explode, perhaps because of an electrical malfunction. In the darkness, a worker kicked over a bucket of hot pitch, and soon Hell Gate was in flames.
The fire quickly spread throughout the park. The buildings were made of frames of lath (thin strips of wood) covered with staff (a moldable mixture of plaster of Paris and hemp fiber). Both materials were highly flammable, and as they were common in the Coney Island amusement parks, fires were a persistent problem there. Because of this, a new high-pressure water pumping station had been constructed at Twelfth Street and Neptune Avenue a few years earlier. But on this night it failed. Water was available, but not enough to contain the fire before it enveloped Dreamland.
Chaos broke loose as the park burned. As the one-armed Captain Bonavita strove to save his big cats with only the swiftly encroaching flames for illumination, some of the terrified animals escaped. A lion named Black Prince rushed into the streets, among crowds of onlookers, and was shot by police. By morning, the fire was out, and Dreamland was reduced to a soggy, smoldering mess.

In the century since this horrifying accident, several preservation forces for all Coney and sideshow-related history have emerged. In keeping with this mission, The Great Coney Island Spectacularium have been “hard at work with our team of distinguished collaborators attempting to finish The Cosmorama of the Great Dreamland Fire, a 360 degree immersive spectacle in the style of the mighty cycloramas of the 19th Century” (Spectacularium.org).

While none of Dreamland's owners were of show business background, they were fortunate to obtain the services of Samuel Gumpertz, a successful show business prodigy from Missouri. He was born in 1868 in Washington D.C. to Herman and Elizabeth Gumpertz. His father, who was a Civil War veteran and lawyer, soon moved his family to St. Louis. When the Montgomery and Queens Circus came to town when he was nine, he fulfilled his dream of joining the big top by running away from home. He won his first job by walking on his hands and doing flip-flops. He became so adept, that when the Jackley family of acrobats lost a "top mounter" they hired young Sam at $3.00 per week to fill the spot. However, his acrobat career was short lived when one day he did a double somersault from the top of the human pyramid and landed on his head on the sawdust below.

He returned home and resumed school, but three years later when his family moved to San Francisco, Sam became an actor. He performed children's roles at the Tivoli Opera House, but when his voice changed at age fifteen, he was demoted to an usher. With hurt pride, he traveled to Texas to become a cowboy and worked three years on a ranch. When Buffalo Bill Cody's show played in nearby Abilene, the lure was too great. He joined the show as a candy butcher, but later performed in the ring as a member of Buffalo Bill's famous Congress of Rough Riders of all Nations.

From 1893 to 1897 Gumpertz ran two theaters and four amusement parks in St. Louis. He produced a series of Shakespeare plays, managed Shadow the Strongman and was Harry Houndi's first manager. Then from 1897 to 1903 he operated a chain of 17 theaters for Colonel John D. Hopkins who he met while working for Buffalo Bill.

Gumpertz brought his theatrical and circus background to Dreamland. He proposed one of Coney Island's most unusual attractions, a miniature village for hundreds of midgets to live in and entertain the paying public. It was his love of the circus that convinced Bostock to combine his American and European trained animal shows and perform with them in a permanent arena during Coney's summer season. And he recruited other circus acts to perform in a ring at the center of Dreamland's lagoon.

Dreamland, when it opened on a rainy foggy Saturday at 4 P.M. (three hours late) to a crowd of 135,000 enthusiastic visitors, was certainly bigger and bolder, but not necessarily better than Luna Park. The owners intended that their park show the unappreciated public, beauty and grandeur in its architecture, but the public found it stilted. Since it was located on the sea, Dreamland was planned around an actual inlet of the Atlantic and had its two piers jutting into the sea. Visitors for 35 cents including admission (30 cents on weekdays) could arrive by steamship from terminals in Manhattan at the Battery, 23rd Street and Harlem. Elaborate amusement structures with gaudy facades painted virgin white fronted on broad promenades surrounding a horseshoe shaped lagoon. At the inland end the 375 foot Beacon Tower, pure white with 100,000 lights, dwarfed Luna's multi-colored forest of spires and towers.

ONCE THE ROAD TURNED YELLOW, we knew it was going to be a weird day. Our search for the fabled, often sought after town of Midgetville brings us to this year's site somewhere in northern New Jersey.

Here, our normal sized friend inspects the tiny houses in a community we believe may be the town that everyone and their brother has been to, but can never remember how to get there.

Although we cannot be sure this is the property once belonging to the Ringling Company, we can attest to the fact that these homes come complete with four-foot doors and undersized windows.

Is this Midgetville? One of our informants told us there was a tiny Victorian castle in Midgetville, but we didn't find one here. The stop signs weren't three feet tall either.

Unfortunately, there was no one around to confirm this site as being the real Midgetville, so we're keeping it logged in the database and we're off to another lead on tracking this elusive community. But if you must tell your friends where you vacationed this year, tell 'em you visited Midgetville . . . in Weird, NJ.

THE THINGS YOU SEE WHEN YOU'RE DRUNK
After a crazy night of drinking and skiing, my friends and I had the great idea to check out Midgetville. We heard that if you go there at around 2 it’s awesome, so we said “What the hell?” So we’re driving down that stretch of road, when out of nowhere we see this midget walking across the street. We were bugging out. We had heard the stories about Midgetville, but never believed them. Me and my friends were going nuts. None of us knew what to do. Some drunken teenager in the back yelled out “MIDGET.”

The lil’ guy saw us, then ran onto this back road. We turned down the road, but no midget - all we saw was woods. We went up and down this small stretch for about 25 minutes and saw no trace of the midget. We never found any houses or small stop signs but ever since then we all now believe in Midgetville. We always cruise on down that road now, hoping to come in contact with another one of the infamous lil’ people.

I don't know if any "little people" lived there when you guys visited, but recently I visited this small place and there were many, many little people there. I was driving by and I heard bangs as I saw a few dwarves and I thought they were throwing cans at my car. When I got out to check the damage, it was much more than I had expected. What I found was 9 bulletholes on the passenger’s side of my brand new car. I went to the police and asked them about this. They told me that I wasn't supposed to be down there, and that any car without a permit to enter that did, was shot at. The "little people" apparently have the right to shoot at you from the waist down.

Midgetville was on River Road before the GWB. The houses were small and the stop signs small. They were cottages and still exist, although no midgets lived there. It was a rumor spread to keep people out of this exclusive area, even though we always wound up there at 5am after a drunken night.

One of the Ringling Bros. had an estate in Morris Township. I found out about this when we visited the very elaborate Ringling Museum in St. Petersburg, FL. I think they even mentioned people from the circus staying on the estate. I had driven past it a few times but never investigated further.

My brother visited the house called Midgetville. It was built to the size scale of a pair of height challenged folk who had made a great deal of money in motion pictures way back when. Supposedly the house looks no different from the outside. After the house was sold, the small scale interior was left intact, but the floors were dropped to provide head room for the average height occupants. My brother is going to contact the person who took him there many years ago.

The only thing the people of Midgetville want printed about their block is this: There are no midgets here, only midgetized houses.
The people are of normal size, but what has become colossal is the Midgetville myth: That Norwood Terrace, a short residential block along the Passaic River about 15 miles west of Midtown Manhattan, is inhabited by little people.
In the early 1900's, when the river was clean, this was a breezy resort area lined with summer bungalows. Now the river is polluted and most of the 20 bungalows have become full-time homes, many of them enlarged. About half the houses here remain the size of a mobile home, which has apparently given way to the local legend that this is a land of Lilliputians.
Late at night, several times a week, young people full of beer come in carloads to carouse. Some zip through with headlights off and car horns on. Sometimes the convoys troll through with hood-surfing teens screaming obscenity-laced commands for the midgets to wake up and show themselves. When the midgets don't show, the revelers may throw bottles or eggs at front doors, or knock on windows and ring doorbells to ask or scream for the midgets.

Anyway, after receiving this beat-up, well-worn and OLD Cat Suit in the mail, Kim and Pam get curious as to where itt came from. Some lucky diggin’ through old papers reveals the origin of the suit; Turns out that the suit was both a movie prop and worn by a real life superhero, or somethin’ close to it. (He’s the dude we see on the cover.) Deitch spends most of this chapter researching the history of the suit, digging through old papers, simultaneously following a comic strip adaptation of the movie serial Alias the Cat, and also finding strange parallels between the strip and actual events.

We’ve moved staunchly into fantasy here, (probably. Almost certainly.) still exceptionally true-to-life and believable fantasy, with a bunch of acutely observed details to ground it. Deitch brings a really keen understanding of the early 20^th century to bear, slippin’ in a concise history of early American cinema without ever dropping the threads of the plot. And the poor Cat-cowled superhero… /but no. I’m trying to keep the backstory spoiler free. I WILL say that “Alias the Cat” applies to more than one character, because while we never SEE Waldo in this chapter, there’s a mysterious, off-screen figure handin’ out Cat Suits to wanna-be vigilantes…

And Deitch is here to watch the abandoned city, supposedly the site of “Alias the Cat’s” unhappy adventures, in it’s death throws. There’s another major plot concerns a hidden cache of munitions built by amoral war profiteers in WW I that tie into a homegrown terrorist attack on the Big Apple today… But all that feels beside the point. You get the sense that the story started before the book did, and will continue after we’re gone. For all of Kim Deitch’s… or the narrators… or who-the-hell-ever’s…. attempts to unearth and connect with history, he ends up being almost completely irrelevant to the overall plot. History just sweeps right over him… Until the end, where he’s newly released from the asylum, an’ he gives us a wink and a nod, and gets to work drawing, a world he finally – on the last page- confesses is “Half Remebered, Half Imagined.”
And, sure, the Stuff Of Dreams is part of it all. There’s a cache of terrifying statues carved by the chief architect of Midgetville (and part time mad bomber), there’s the whirring, clanking, flashing scale model of WEISGARDEN, and there’s the town itself… Midgetville was a tourist attraction, where out-of-towners would come to watch the townies dress up as elves as they worked, but, as Waldo tells us
“BUT RIGHT UNDER THEIR NOSES [Mr.] Beckendorf was running those midgets ragged. Damn few lasted more than a couple of years.”

Which is really just another secret history.
There’s an ironic contrast here between the poor Midgetvillians being worked to death square in the public eye and the way the book ends with Deitch/the narrator at the drawing table, enthusing that he can recreate the world HIS way,
“A wonderful place, where midgets make bread softer than the pillow you lay your weary head on at night.”

Los pejes a los que iba dirigido el mensaje, los buscones de Luis Serrano y Nydia Velazquez protestan, es tiempo de votaciones pronto...

I would much rather a client gave us his successes and spared us his challeniges. But it is true that million-dollar budgets are frequently used as a substitute for good advertising. I have heard too often that advertisers must wait for the cumualative impact of a campaign to take effct.

Nonsense. The only ad that we'll run is an ad that has an immediate effect---even if it's only someone writing to say "that was the worst ad I've ever seen."

In fact the first ad we ever ran was this mother-in-law ad for the LADIES' HOME JOURNAL, We did it rather tongue in cheek but people reacted intensely.

People either likedit or disliked it, according to their relations with their mothers-in-law.

But as the advertising manager at the JOURNAL said "At least we heard from people for the first time in years."

I want an ad that people will notice and react to.

I want people to be involved. If a client says "Well, we'll offend someone," I answer, "Well, there are even people who disliked Eisenhower."

If you are alive, you've got to offend someone.

But of course if you're not, you won't. But by the same token, when you do offend some people, you are going to move and exhilarate others.

If we let copy research dictate whether we should or should not run ads, we would be out of business.

Aprovechando mi nueva conexion rapida, tener al nene en casa y un fin de semana largo, libre...bueno, a seguir buscando musica. Siempre me ha gustado este grupo escoses Belle and Sebastian. Tienen unas letras curiosas que no siempre coinciden con el sentimiento que dicen expresar. O sea, puede ser una letra y musica feliz, pero en realidad expresa un fracaso amoroso...Combinemos esto con mi otra obsesion, versiones animadas de las cosas y pues la maquina engrana. The Real Tuesday Weld are a British band, fronted by lead singer and founder Stephen Coates. The sci-fi music video for Chllngr’s “Change” is loaded with hypnotic 2-D and 3-D animations, from the requisite 2001: A Space Odyssey monoliths to rotoscoping in honor of legendary filmmaker Ralph Bakshi.
“The loose story was a total nerd-out session,” co-director Ryan Todd told Wired.com in an e-mail. “We snuck in space battles, magic, terraforming, psychedelia, meditation, relationship drama and whatever else we had in our heads at the time.”
The kitchen-sink geek approach to making the video, premiering exclusively above, worked wonders, given the track’s space-age chill. Chllngr — aka California-born, Copenhagen-based musician Steven Borth — and the video were both inspired by dub engineering pioneers such as King Tubby and his protege Scientist.

“The one creative direction Borth gave was that he wanted something ‘galactic,’ which totally fit the music,” co-director Chad Turner told Wired.com by e-mail. “As soon as we heard the track, we started going through the radical albums from Jamaica. All the Mikey Dread and King Tubby covers were full of lasers and spaceships, and just plain funky.” Turner cited Bakshi and sci-fi anime like Robotech and Macross as other influences.
With a single recurring lyric and celestial atmosphere to spare, the “Change” video looks stellar, considering its bare plot is about, uh … how did Todd put it?
“A space guy in the universe trying to make change and create groovy things, despite his girl’s other plans.”

The Story of Cholera was produced in collaboration with award-winning animator Yoni Goodman.

We embarked on this project in response to the outbreak of cholera in Haiti and reports that the population needed basic and accurate messages about the disease.
The four-minute animation covers transmission, prevention, signs of cholera, and care in a simple and accessible way. The film follows evidence-based guidelines, consistent with messages already in place in Haiti. Earlier versions have been field-tested, as well as reviewed for accuracy and content.

El brote que tiene en alerta a la República Dominicana no tiene por qué detenerte en tus deseos de darte una escapadita a la isla caribeña para disfrutar de sus playas durante esta temporada veraniega.

Eso sí, hay varias recomendaciones que debes tomar en consideración a la hora de darte el viajecito al vecino país o cualquier otro destino que estimes necesario.

La semana pasada se registró en Puerto Rico el primer caso de cólera. De inmediato sonó la alarma de alerta, pero las autoridades locales fueron enfáticas en que se trató de un “caso importado” a través de un misionero que viajó a la República Dominicana.

La noticia provocó que el Departamento de Salud emitiera una Guía de Protección para evitar el contagio con la infección intestinal, que puede ser utilizada tanto en su viaje a Santo Domingo como hacia otro territorio donde se sienta inseguro sobre las medidas de salubridad existentes.

Hay que recordar que el brote de cólera que hoy azota a la República Dominicana inició en Haití a meses de ser sacudido por un terremoto que dejó a miles de muertos y a otros miles desprovistos de hogar y de seguras medidas de salubridad.

“Las personas pueden continuar visitando la República Dominicana y otras jurisdicciones y, como se ha resaltado en los pasados días, es recomendable... no ingerir agua si la botella no está debidamente sellada, para garantizar que es de una fuente confiable y no está contaminada”, comentó el titular de Salud, Lorenzo González.

Y las personas civilizadas se retraen. Wilson y Kelling lo explicaban así: "Muchos ciudadanos pensarán que el crimen, sobre todo el crimen violento, se multiplica, y consiguientemente modificarán su conducta. Si se falsea la contabilidad para pagar menos impuestos, mentir a los empleados es más fácil -y también a los directivos, y a los propietarios-. Si lo que cuenta es la rentabilidad a corto plazo, se descuidan las normas de seguridad e higiene en el trabajo y las de seguridad del producto o del servicio, se trata a las personas con menos respeto, el cliente es cada vez más un objeto y no una persona cuyas necesidades hay que satisfacer...

One way to stretch limited police resources is being tried in some public housing projects. Tenant organizations hire off-duty police officers for patrol work in their buildings. The costs are not high (at least not per resident), the officer likes the additional income, and the residents feel safer. Such arrangements are probably more successful than hiring private watchmen, and the Newark experiment helps us understand why. A private security guard may deter crime or misconduct by his presence, and he may go to the aid of persons needing help, but he may well not intervene—that is, control or drive away—someone challenging community standards. Being a sworn officer—a "real cop"—seems to give one the confidence, the sense of duty, and the aura of authority necessary to perform this difficult task.
Patrol officers might be encouraged to go to and from duty stations on public transportation and, while on the bus or subway car, enforce rules about smoking, drinking, disorderly conduct, and the like. The enforcement need involve nothing more than ejecting the offender (the offense, after all, is not one with which a booking officer or a judge wishes to be bothered). Perhaps the random but relentless maintenance of standards on buses would lead to conditions on buses that approximate the level of civility we now take for granted on airplanes.

According to an empirical view known as “the flavor principle”³⁰, the differences between regional cuisines can be reduced to a few key ingredients with specific flavors: adding soy sauce to a dish almost automatically gives it an oriental taste because Asians use soy sauce widely in their food and other ethnic groups do not; by contrast paprika, onion, and lard is a signature of Hungarian cuisine. Can we systematically identify the ingredient combinations responsible for the taste palette of a regional cuisine? To answer this question, we measure the authenticity of each ingredient ( ), ingredient pair ( ), and ingredient triplet ( ) (see Methods). In Fig. 4 we organize the six most authentic single ingredients, ingredient pairs and triplets for North American and East Asian cuisines in a flavor pyramid. The rather different ingredient classes (as reflected by their color) in the two pyramids capture the differences between the two cuisines: North American food heavily relies on dairy products, eggs and wheat; by contrast, East Asian cuisine is dominated by plant derivatives like soy sauce, sesame oil, and rice and ginger. Finally, the two pyramids also illustrate the different affinities of the two regional cuisines towards food pairs with shared compounds. The most authentic ingredient pairs and triplets in the North American cuisine share multiple flavor compounds, indicated by black links, but such compound-sharing links are rare among the most authentic combinations in East Asian cuisine.

The theremin was originally the product of Russian government-sponsored research into proximity sensors. The instrument was invented by a young Russian physicist named Lev Sergeivich Termen (known in the West as Léon Theremin) in October 1920^[3] after the outbreak of the Russian civil war. After positive reviews at Moscow electronics conferences, Theremin demonstrated the device to Bolshevik leader Vladimir Lenin. During the 1930s Lucie Bigelow Rosen was also taken up with the theremin and together with her husband Walter Bigelow Rosen provided both financial and artistic support to the development and popularisation of the instrument.^[5]^[6]
In 1938, Theremin left the United States, though the circumstances related to his departure are in dispute. Many accounts claim he was taken from his New York City apartment by KGB agents,^[7] taken back to the Soviet Union and made to work in a sharashka laboratory prison camp at Magadan, Siberia. In his 2000 biography of the inventor, Theremin: Ether Music and Espionage, Albert Glinsky suggested the Russian had fled to escape crushing personal debts, and was then caught up in Stalin's political purges. The THEREMIN (aka Theremin-vox) is one of the most distinctive of all electronic instruments. It was invented in 1919 by Russian physicist and musician Lev Sergeyevich Termen, whose name somehow became French-ified to Leon Theremin. It has a unique sound, and a unique design. It's also one of the very few instruments you play without touching. Instead of a keyboard, or strings, it has antennas which sense the movements of your hands in the surrounding space. Those antennas provide a control of pitch and loudness. The pitch antenna is a vertical rod situated in front of the player and slightly to the right. The loudness antenna is placed to the left and fashioned into a horizontal loop so as to be under the horizontal palm of the player's left hand. Movement of the right hand toward the pitch antenna controls pitch, while movement of the left hand toward the volume antenna controls loudness or volume.

Pitch is changed by capacitance of your hand, or whatever goes close to the antenna. The Theremin has two very high frequency oscillators (around 350 kHz). One of them is fixed, and the other is varied by the capacitance of your hand: it's the difference between the two frequencies which decides the pitch. That way, even a 0.05% change in the variable oscillator can be substantial at audio frequency - enough, with good design, to give a range of five octaves.

Thus the audio frequency note is produced by heterodyning the outputs of two ultrasonic oscillators. The fixed oscillator operates in the region of 350 KHz with the variable pitch oscillator being above this frequency, the difference equaling the frequency of the note being played. The position of the right hand is sensed by the change of capacitance it introduces in the pitch antenna, this change controls the frequency of the variable pitch oscillator.

Left hand circuitry derives a control voltage from the loudness antenna, this voltage being used to control the gain of the voltage controlled amplifier and hence the amplitude of the output.

The resulting sine wave output is processed to give more complex waveforms which provide a choice of tone colors in addition to the pure sine wave tone.

[219] Guanica Restoration Project

I passed by the dry forest yesterday after my weekly Yauco meeting. Since I was late I could not stay. However I just had to give more details on the hydraulics of the valley and how bad decisions in the past regarding the maintenance of the Coffee Industry has caused excessive erosion that were not impacting the coral reefs of the Guanica Bay.

The ex was there last weekend. Guanica is a town with history and the UNESCO certified dry forest, a natural wonder of the world. So my interest on visiting the valley for photo documenting the trails. Winter is the season there is a large migration of birds and the forest is in its wettest period of the year.

I wont be able to visit soon, although it is scheduled, so instead I present some scientific studies on the area, in hope that you rediscover this incredible natural wonder.

Summary: Eutrophication, reduced volume of water accumulated have caused accumulation of phosphorus and sulfur. Promoting toxic conditions. Solution: rehabilitate the area to receive fresh water and accumulate. Create a peat industry to use the rotting biomass as compost.

Then, a small poster presented on the restoration of the Guanica Bay by adopting the watershed and rehabilitation of the Guanica Lagoon as an effort to reduce nutrient migrations to the Guanica Bay.

All through the summertime months highs here in Guanica can get into the 90's with overnight lows in the 60's. Make sure to bring sun cover protection as the sun can be brutal in your skin.

If you are hiking, even though some trails have tall trees and shadow, you should use protection from the sun, have enough water, and watch for the first sights of dehydration.

On UNESCO’s list of Biosphere Reserves the dry forest has 48 rare tree species and is an excellent place for bird watching and hiking. It comprises coastal areas with several mangrove cays as well as subtropical dry forest.

The main reason to visit Guanica, Puerto Rico is the beaches. From the Balneario Caña (cania) Gorda, Ballena beach, Manglillos beach, Tamarindo Beach, Playa Santa beach, and Gilligan's Island (Cayo Caña Gorda), Guanica offers the best in beaches for the family.

At Balneario Caña Gorda the gentle water at this beach washes onto a wide swath of sand fringed with palm trees. It is one of the favorite beaches among locals.

The beach comprises of picnic tables, restrooms, showers, and changing facilities. In Caña Gorda go exploring the many small bays and coves common in the area. These are uninhabited and they invite the imagination to run wild as you discover crannies and nooks.

If a peaceful lifestyle lived on the sandy shores of a beautiful blue sea teaming with all sorts of colorful marine life appeals to you, then you might find that Caña Gorda is the place you'll spend some time in.

I am a rather old fashioned person. I hate luxury in all its forms so I'd prefer the option of staying in a cozy B&B.

In the US the first single to be released from the album was Talk About The Blues on 6 October 1998. This song was recorded during a session with Calvin Johnson at Dub Narcotic, Olympia, Washington. Most of the other tracks recorded at this time would be released in 1999 as the collaborative album Sideways Soul: Dub Narcotic Sound System Meets The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion in a Dancehall Style!.

The music video, directed by Evan Bernard, features Winona Ryder, Giovanni Ribisi and John C. Reilly as the Blues Explosion[34] with Judah, Russell and Jon acting. "The singer told MTV Online: I think that people are really going to be surprised when they see the acting on the part of the Blues Explosion. When people get a load of some of the heavy, dramatic, really very intense scenes that we pulled out from our souls, I think people are really going to be blown away.".[35]

Throughout the life of the band the use of the word "blues" in the band name has caused a great deal of debate. The lyrics of Talk About The Blues address this issue referring directly to MTV and Rolling Stone magazine and features the line "I do not play no blues, I play rock 'n' roll" (which itself was a reference to the Mississippi Fred McDowell album I Do Not Play No Rock 'n' Roll).

"Talk About The Blues" was a reaction a Rolling Stone review of Now I Got Worry and Q&A with Jon Spencer.[36]

"I wrote the song right after we did the interview, inspired by that and also some of the criticism we’ve received over the past couple years. If we tried to record some song that was a response to criticism as it happened, that would be too heavy-handed. The lyrics stayed true to the original off-the-cuff feel, what you call a rant. But it's not such a big deal, you know. A lot of that stuff just doesn't merit a response." [36]

The video was first released on 25 October 2005 to subscribers of the Gorillaz website mailing list. Like the video for "Clint Eastwood", the video for "Dirty Harry" references the Clint Eastwood film of the same name. The band was going to use a computer animated desert, but it turned out simply flying the crew and band to the desert was cheaper and easier. Most of the video features shirtless 2-D and an animated version of the Children's Choir San Fernandez stranded in the middle of a desert, following what appears to have been a helicopter crash. The survivors keep themselves entertained with the song while awaiting the arrival of rescuers, portrayed by Noodle and Murdoc crewing a South African Defence Force Casspir mine-proof vehicle driven by Russel (who wears a Fu Manchu). The song and video feature a guest appearance by Pharcyde rapper Bootie Brown, who leaps out of a sand dune in World War II military fatigues to perform his verse of the song. In the end of the video the Gorillaz, the children and Bootie Brown depart the crash site in the military vehicle, which breaks down meters away. The themes in the single, as well as the themes in the entire album are all based on Damon Albarn's observations on the state that the world is in today.^[1] The helmet which appears on the single cover and the poster for the video, seen in the cinema section of the Gorillaz website, is reminiscent of the Full Metal Jacket film poster.

De cuando en vez se mencionan estas miniaturas donde se reproducen en detalle escenas de crimen para entrenar a los nuevos agentes forenses. Habia visto un articulo en Details de varios a/nos atras donde supe que esto existia. Armar maquetas es interesante...cuando le pones una historia.

Este articulo me recordo lo impresionante e interesante de conceptualizar escenas de crimen como si fuera una casita de mu/necas...Lo encontre interesante, debido a que en la era en que se hizo era revolucionario y su constructora lo hizo en sus 50s. En un ambiente machista...Sinceramente impresionante. Y lo dejo simple, mas detalles en los links.

She was inspired by a classmate of her brother, George Burgess Magrath, who was just getting his MD from Harvard Medical School and was particularly interested in death investigation.[1][2] They remained close friends until his death in 1938. Magrath became a chief medical examiner in Boston and together they lobbied to have coroners replaced by medical professionals. Glessner Lee endowed the Harvard department of legal medicine (in 1931, the first such department in the country),[3] a chair in the field, the George Burgess Magrath Library,[1][4] and Harvard Associates in Police Science, a national organization for the furtherance of forensic science, one division of which is the Frances Glessner Lee Homicide School.[5] The Harvard program influenced other states to change over from the coroner system. Magrath became the department's first Chair.

Through the 1940s and 1950s, Lee hosted a series of semi-annual "Nutshell Studies of Unexplained Death." 30 or 40 leading crime scene investigators would be invited to a week-long conference, where she would present them with an intricately constructed diorama of actual crime scenes, complete with working doors, windows, and lights. They would have 90 minutes to study the scene. The week culminated in a banquet at the Ritz Carlton.[1][4] The 18 dioramas are still used for training purposes by Harvard Associates in Police Science.[5]

For her work, Lee was made an honorary Captain in the New Hampshire State Police in 1943, the first woman in the US to hold that rank.[3][5]

The models display an astounding level of precision and detail: shades can be raised and lowered, mice live in the walls, stereoscopes work, whistles blow and pencils write. Through framing, scale, lighting, color, and depth of field, I attempt to bring intimacy and emotion to the scene of the crime. I want viewers to feel as if they inhabit the miniatures - to loose their sense of proportion and experience the large in the small.

In addition to creating over 100 photographs of the models, I spent years researching and writing about the female criminologist who conceived and built the models, Frances Glessner Lee (1878-1962). I considered Lee my collaborator, and as a woman artist, it was important for me to unearth her story and make it known. My writing explores how Lee’s experience of domestic space informed her creations. Lee followed the role prescribed for her as an upper-class woman, but domestic life never suited her. The houses where she lived were a place of refuge, personal expression, and pride, but they were also a source of disempowerment and anxiety. While she was unhappy with the roles she was forced into as a woman, she maintained assumptions about a woman’s place in the home. The models undermine the notion of the home as a safe haven and reveal it to be a far more complex sphere. All of the models depict lower middle class interiors, and the majority of victims are women who suffered violent deaths in the home.

He establecido ya en varias ocasiones que el consumerismo nos mata. Por ende, de nuevo este a/no les regalo la vaca sagrada de oro para el descuento del Black Friday. Cuando entenderemos que si compro algo que no necesito desperdicio dinero, asi el articulo tuviese un 80% de descuento?

No es secreto que he estado haciendo modificaciones a la casa, luego de la ida de la fulana. Quise darle un aire psicoleico y retro al cuarto master. Asi que compre dos marcos de fotos bien grandes y puse estas dos imagenes de alta resolucion. El primero es de una caratula que Moebius hizo para un single de Jimi Hendix. Me gusto tanto que lo imprimi a 18x24 (gracias K Mart!!!)

Busque posters de peliculas, pero nadie local realmente las trae. Asi que encontre este poster escaneado a resolucion completa de Klaus Nomi.

El tema de hoy era el Black Friday. En realidad el tema es mas como K Mart San Patricio maneja el gate de salida hacia el mall.

Hoy, viernes negro la gente comprando televisores de 32 y 40 pulgadas con leves descuentos y tecnologias obsoletas (especialidad de K Mart). Estaban a buen precio, pero realmente tengo que comprar un blu ray y un televisor de alta resolucion para verle las bubis pixeladas y las arrugas corregidas por CGI de Julia Roberts, o los tatuajes digitalmente borrados de Angela Jolie?

Bueno, vi carros con dos de esos y otras cosas mas. A las 8 de la noche, cuando fui al mall, la fila de lay away cruzaba la tienda. Es criminal. Por $300 - 400 de ahorros. Como yo lo veo, yo cotizo a como 70 - 80 / hora. Tres horas esperando en una fila me cuesta 210 - 240. No es negocio...Para un vago de la calle con un cheque del PAN o con Plan 8 is no big deal...

Anyway. Mi rant es con el gate. En lo que espere que imprimiesen el poster pasaron como filita india como 10 carritos, con dos televisores cada uno, aprestando cruzar el gate para llegar al carro, cruzando el mall. Al llegar casi al gate, el celador les dice 'parate ahi, que la ruedita se .... ay que chavienda, otro carrito trancado!!!' Varios minutos despues consiguen el beeper para tumbar el mecanismo que tranca las gomas con el mantra, es que no pueden cruzar el carrito por el mall.

Como en el octavo carrito le digo al celador. 'Mijo, en la seccion de ferreteria tienen tape amarillo a monton por chavo. Porque no te traen un rollo y asi pones un tape marcando que no pasen el carrito. O mejor aun...pon un poster grande...como el 27x34 que me llevo este poster y di: CARRITO SE TRANCA. SI QUIERE CRUZAR EL MALL VAYA A BEST BUY.,.

El celador me dice que hay rotulo, en cada caja registradora. Yo le digo -Aha, y? Ya compraron, no? Adviertanselo de principio...

mmm pensandolo bien, seria un fracaso de vendedor....

Compraron al Gran Combo por cuanto para que le pasaran la culpa de la situacion del pais a los vagos y desempleados. Nos hicieron creer todo el a/no que votaramos e hiciecemos este mantra la cancion mas popular. Incluso nos dijeron del concierto gratuito. En que quedo todo eso? En la patra/na que era de principio? Walter Maldonado y grabada el miércoles pasado, los integrantes expresan antes de cantar el tema: “Hoy todavía seguimos luchando contra las adversidades que día a día nos trae la vida. En FB, un caballero pregunta si hay alguna versión extendida de la canción nueva donde indique dónde se puede conseguir trabajo o “¿acaso el chequecito del gobierno por la canción no dio para incluir eso en la grabación?”

Este rotativo intentó contactar a la agencia J. Walter Maldonado, antes conocida como Martí, Flores Prieto & Watchel, para obtener detalles sobre la producción de la campaña, pero al cierre de esta edición no se había logrado la comunicación.

Por otro lado, el Banco Popular citó en la mañana de hoy a los medios noticiosos para una conferencia de prensa. En diciembre de 2010, la institución bancaria dedicó su producción especial a “La Universidad de la Salsa”, que incluía un disco compacto y un vídeo sobre la trayectoria de la orquesta.

Como buena opción de canción tema (“jingle”) del país imaginario del Gobernador de Puerto Rico, Luis Fortuño, el Banco Popular patrocinó que el Gran Combo violara una de sus canciones. Digo que sería ideal para el país imaginario de Fortuño porque la canción no tiene nada que ver con la situación real que vive la isla. Tal y como quedó reflejado en su vídeo de campaña, el Puerto Rico de Fortuño no existe. Por eso su vídeo de campaña no permite los comentarios, porque hay que ocultar que nadie ve el país que ellos presentan. Porque, como mencionaron los compañeros de #EnProfundo, la obra de Fortuño está para verla, no para criticarla.

[211] Vertederos - A La Tercera La Vencida

He estado ocupado las pasadas semanas en varios proyectos de mi oficina, y aparte del comentario ocasional no he escrito realmente nada. Una de mis misiones fue presentar un estudio preparado por mi oficina relacionado al manejo de desperdicios solidos en Latinoamerica para el reciente congreso de la AIDIS

El congreso estuvo de lo mas interesante e incluyo ponencias de varios paises latinoamericanos. Nuestro tema de manejo de desperdicios solidos cayo justo en el momento en que El Nuevo Dia nos enteraba del cierre de vertederos que se avecina. Este cierre es el tercer aviso que la Agencia Federal para la Proteccion Ambiental (EPA) le ha dado a Puerto Rico para el serio problema de manejo de desperdicios solidos.

El incumplimiento con los estándares ambientales fue lo que, en 1994, llevaron a la EPA y la JCA a ordenar el cierre de 32 de los 61 vertederos que operaban a esa fecha. Entonces se dispuso que los sistemas que quedaron abiertos tomarían las medidas necesarias para estar en total cumplimiento.
Nieves lamentó que 17 años después la historia no sea muy diferente.
“17 años tarde”
Agregó que la JCA solo está cumpliendo con su deber ministerial de regular la operación de los vertederos. “Llevamos más de 17 años tratando que estos sistemas estén en cumplimiento, por eso se estableció una fecha límite de 36 meses. La JCA no estaba siendo lo suficientemente dinámica y estricta en la fiscalización. Esta es una fecha límite que está 17 años tarde”, acotó.
Nieves señaló que, como meta ulterior, la R-11-6-5 persigue elevar la tasa de reciclaje en la Isla, que apenas es de 11.3%, pese a que la Ley 70 de 1992 dispone que debe ser de 35%.
Comentó, además, que se persigue impulsar “otras alternativas” de manejo de desperdicios sólidos, tales como composta y la conversión de basura en energía (‘waste to energy’).
“La última opción es que la basura siga llegando al vertedero. Esto abre una puerta para el reciclaje”, concluyó.

El incumplimiento ambiental en casi todos los 29 vertederos del País -que pudiera costarle su cierre en 36 meses- responde, en gran medida, a que históricamente el reciclaje no ha sido atendido con un “plan real”, admitió ayer el director de la Autoridad de Desperdicios Solidos (ADS), Elí Díaz.

Pese a que una ley de 1992 establece que la tasa de reciclaje debe ser de 35%, Díaz confirmó que es de 11.3%, lo que explica por qué de toda la basura que llega a los vertederos, el 40% es potencialmente reciclable. Esto, a su vez, acorta la vida útil de los vertederos.
En articulos previos de la Alcantarilla habiamos establecido que los desperdicios no se estan desviando y que tenemos varias corrientes que se pudiesen desviar:

Neumaticos Usados

Material vegetativo

Desperdicios fecales de animales

Cienos de plantas de tratamiento de aguas usadas

Cienos de plantas de filtracion de agua potable

En realidad nuestra presentacion indicaba las tecnologias que podian utilizarse para manejar los desperdicios solidos. Estos pudiesen resumirse como:

Vertederos
Vertederos Abiertos
Vertederos Modernos

Esencialmente los vertederos son una opcion si hay terreno disponible y se contempla la proteccion de aguas subterraneas y se recolecta el gas metano generado por la descomposicion de los desperdicios. Tiene la desventaja de no contemplar la remocion de materiales reciclables. Ademas, solo la fraccion biodegradable se convierte en metano...Con tanto material no putrescible se entiende que mas vertederos no van a resolver el problema.

Combustible a Energia
Entonces la alternativa natural es quemar la basura para generar energia. Lo que propusieron originalmente en Arecibo. Sabian que el nombre original del vertedero de San Juan era El Crematorio??? Vamos 50 a/nos atras con esta opcion. Sin embargo, con los controles de contaminacion de aire adecuados podemos usarlo como medida de emergencia para suplir energia alterna a la AEE y resolver el problema de neumaticos y ciertos escombros combustibles. Estas alternas tambien se propusieron con los hornos de ESSROC (Dorado) y Ponce Cement (Ponce). Tiene gran oposicion debido a que no es tan sostenible como otras opciones.

Gasificacion o Pirolisis
Una opcion mas inteligente es utilizar el proceso de pirolisis. Esta es la tecnica que se usaba para generar el carbon de le/na. En condiciones controladas de oxigeno y presion el material organico del desperdicio se carboniza y genera un gas sintetico rico en hidrogeno. El residuo, un chamuscado, se dispone como cenizas. La cantidad que se recobra como combustible es mucho mas alta que la de una quema a campo abierto. Obviamente requiere sofisticados equipos de control atmosferico pero la mayor parte del desperdicio es utilizado. La desventaja es que se pierde el material reutilizable (composta, material vegetativo) en el proceso.

Un proceso mas sofisticado, Plasma, requiere grandes cantidades de energia pero genera una ceniza cristalina de gran pureza y que es quimicamente inerte. Esta opcion es preferida por grandes metropolis como todo Japon o Asia.

Como todo lo discutido en la Alcantarilla tengo un bias por procesos donde los recursos naturales se conservan o reutilizan. Tenemos grandes cantidades de biosolidos que pudiesemos estar desviando de los vertederos. Ya habia comentado mi intervencion en proyectos como el de los biodigestores propuestos para Camarero Racetrack, el uso de metanogenesis para bajar cargas altas como la Cervecera de Puerto Rico, Coca Cola o Pepsico o lo que Brazil propone con sus vaquerias para bajar las cargas de Nitrogeno y Fosforo.

Digestion Anaerobica
Usamos una charca o reactor ausente de oxigeno para favorecer la metanogenesis. El desperdicio convierte la carga en metano que luego se quema en un flare o se usa para generar energia. La tecnologia esta pegada en Europa y Sur America. Es de relativa baja tecnologia para comunidades en desarrollo. Pero...no sirve para los desperdicios inorganicos tipicos de la ciudad. Esta alterna es para la ruralia o la industria avicola y pecuaria.

Composta
Similar a la digestion anaerobica puesto que el solido generado se puede reusar como suelo. Y al igual a la digestion, solo sirve para desechos animales y ciertos alimentos y plantas.

Sistemas Publicos Privados (hibridos)
Esencialmente algo asi crearian grandes ciudades. Mientras el municipio o subsidiaria clasifica y separa los desperdicios, se generan pellets de desperdicios uniformes que se usan para alimentar hornos de sistemas de gasificacion o de Combustible a Energia.

Finalmente, la solucion Back to the Future...Algo que convierta el desperdicio directo a combiustible liquido o biodiesel... Bueno a pequena escala, en gran escala veremos.

Conclusion final...cada zona o municipio debe usar una combinacion de estas tecnologias para resolver el problema. Como comentaba en algun lado. Lo que hace falta es tener un norte, y comenzar, sin pensar en votos, en como resolver esto al menor precio por libra y maximizando el reuso de reciclables y recuperando suelo y top soil para nuestra islita que se ahoga en basura.

Pensemos en esto mientras comamos abundantemente ma/nana, el Dia del Pavo...Preludio del maldito Viernes Negro. Total, sera la tercera la vencida? O amapucharemos de nuevo la resolucion definitiva de este problema.

Se propone construir y operar una Planta de Gasificación y Conversión de Desperdicios en Energía, utilizando tecnología de gasificación. El proceso produce un gas combustible sintético (syngas), que será el combustible para una caldera de vapor. El vapor impulsa el generador eléctrico por medio de una turbina de vapor. Se propone construir la facilidad en terrenos zonificados para uso industrial propiedad de la Autoridad de Tierras de Puerto Rico.

El proyecto propuesto tendrá capacidad para procesar hasta 90,000 toneladas anuales de desperdicios municipales. El gas sintético (“syngas”) producido se utilizará como combustible en motores de gas con capacidad de generación de hasta 10 MW de electricidad, podría ser enviado a otros
usuarios, o formar parte de una red regional de energía.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Botanic Garden produced this 9-minute on-line video, "Reduce Runoff: Slow It Down, Spread It Out, Soak It In," that highlights green techniques such as rain gardens, green roofs and rain barrels to help manage stormwater runoff.
The film showcases green techniques that are being used in urban areas to reduce the effects of stormwater runoff on the quality of downstream receiving waters. The goal is to mimic the natural way water moves through an area before development by using design techniques that infiltrate, evaporate, and reuse runoff close to its source.
The techniques are innovative stormwater management practices that manage urban stormwater runoff at its source, and are very effective at reducing the volume of stormwater runoff and capturing harmful pollutants. Using vegetated areas that capture runoff also improves air quality, mitigates the effects of urban heat islands and reduces a community's overall carbon footprint.
The video highlights green techniques on display in 2008 at the U.S. Botanic Garden's "One Planet – Ours!" Exhibit" and at the U.S. EPA in Washington, D.C., including recently completed cisterns.

Esta cae en la categoria de rant. Hace dias que mis labores no me dejan actualizar el blog. Hace semanas me ha estado trabajando lo siguiente. Comparaba la libertad relativa que tenia cuando muchacho a las libertades que me dejan tener a un menor en el medio de una urbanizacion moderna. Los ni/nos cada vez tienen mas restricto su ambiente. La situacion esta tan peligrosa en estos dias que se nos vende que es un acto de maltrato dejar que un menor vaya solo a la tienda o que merodee por la urbanizacion. En mi caso tuve un caso con el Departamento de la Familia investigo un maltrato solo porque a un vecino no le gusto que mi hijo hubiese subido solo al techo de la casa. Ese es el tema de aquel articulo...

THE DECLINE OF PLAY
An article in the most recent issue of the American Journal of Play details not only how much children's play time has declined, but how this lack of play affects emotional development, leading to the rise of anxiety, depression, and problems of attention and self control.
"Since about 1955 ... children's free play has been continually declining, at least partly because adults have exerted ever-increasing control over children's activities," says the author Peter Gray, Ph.D., Professor of Psychology (emeritus) at Boston College. Gray defines "free play" as play a child undertakes him- or her-self and which is self-directed and an end in itself, rather than part of some organized activity.
Gray describes this kind of unstructured, freely-chosen play as a testing ground for life. It provides critical life experiences without which young children cannot develop into confident and competent adults. Gray's article is meant to serve as a wake-up call regarding the effects of lost play, and he believes that lack of childhood free play time is a huge loss that must be addressed for the sake of our children and society.

FIVE WAYS PLAY BENEFITS KIDS
When children are in charge of their own play, it provides a foundation for their future mental health as older children and adults. Gray mentions five main benefits:
1. Play gives children a chance to find and develop a connection to their own self-identified and self-guided interests.
As they choose the activities that make up free play, kids learn to direct themselves and pursue and elaborate on their interests in a way that can sustain them throughout life. Gray notes that: "...in school, children work for grades and praise and in adult-directed sports, they work for praise and trophies.... In free play, children do what they want to do, and the learning and psychological growth that results are byproducts, not conscious goals of the activity."
2. It is through play that children first learn how to make decisions, solve problems, exert self control, and follow rules.
As children direct their own free play and solve the problems that come up, they must exert control over themselves and must, at times, accept restrictions on their own behavior and follow the rules if they want to be accepted and successful in the game.
As children negotiate both their physical and social environments through play, they can gain a sense of mastery over their world, Gray contends. It is this aspect of play that offers enormous psychological benefits, helping to protect children from anxiety and depression.
"Children who do not have the opportunity to control their own actions, to make and follow through on their own decisions, to solve their own problems, and to learn how to follow rules in the course of play grow up feeling that they are not in control of their own lives and fate. They grow up feeling that they are dependent on luck and on the goodwill and whims of others...."
Anxiety and depression often occur when an individual feels a lack of control over his or her own life. "Those who believe that they master their own fate are much less likely to become anxious or depressed than those who believe that they are victims of circumstances beyond their control." Gray believes that the loss of playtime lessons about one's ability to exert control over some life circumstances set the scene for anxiety and depression.
3. Children learn to handle their emotions, including anger and fear, during play.
In free play, children put themselves into both physically and socially challenging situations and learn to control the emotions that arise from these stressors. They role play, swing, slide, and climb trees ... and "such activities are fun to the degree that they are moderately frightening ... nobody but the child himself or herself knows the right dose."
Gray suggests that the reduced ability to regulate emotions may be a key factor in the development of some anxiety disorders. "Individuals suffering from anxiety disorders describe losing emotional control as one of their greatest fears. They are afraid of their own fear, and therefore small degrees of fear generated by mildly threatening situations lead to high degrees of fear generated by the person's fear of losing control." Adults who did not have the opportunity to experience and cope with moderately challenging emotional situations during play are more at risk for feeling anxious and overwhelmed by emotion-provoking situations in adult life.
4. Play helps children make friends and learn to get along with each other as equals.
Social play is a natural means of making friends and learning to treat one another fairly. Since play is voluntary and playmates may abandon the game at any time if they feel uncomfortable, children learn to be aware of their playmates' needs and attempt to meet them in order to maintain the play.
Gray believes that "learning to get along and cooperate with others as equals may be the most crucial evolutionary function of human social play ... and that social play is nature's means of teaching young humans that they are not special. Even those who are more skilled at the game's actions ... must consider the needs and wishes of the others as equal to their own, or else the others will exclude them." Gray cites increasing social isolation as a potential precursor to psychopathology and notes that the decline in play may be "both a consequence and a cause of the increased social isolation and loneliness in the culture."
5. Most importantly, play is a source of happiness.
When children are asked about the activities that bring them happiness, they say they are happier when playing with friends than in any other situation. Perhaps you felt this way when remembering your own childhood play experiences at the beginning of this article.
Gray sees the loss of play time as a double whammy: we have not only taken away the joys of free play, we have replaced them with emotionally stressful activities. "[A]s a society, we have come to the conclusion that to protect children from danger and to educate them, we must deprive them of the very activity that makes them happiest and place them for ever more hours in settings where they are more or less continually directed and evaluated by adults, setting almost designed to produce anxiety and depression."

El terror infundado, el departamento de la familia y otros han logrado eliminar casi por completo el juego en los ni/nos. Articulos han mencionado cada vez menos juego menos libretad a los ninos. Paso esto ahora con mi hijo, que se aburre leyendo libros o jugando videojuegos. Lo de pasar horas muertas jugando en el campo o en varios bloques de mi urbanizacion es algo impensable en estos dias, a pesar del facil acceso a GPS y celulares. Escribo esta nota molesto por las dosis de medicamento que se le esta dando a mi hijo. No por el medicamento, es necesario. Sino por que la situacion y el ambiente de pasar un proceso de divorcio le hace pasar innecesariamente.
Tambien cuando veo a mis sobrinos y vecinos que le piden proyectos como si fueran universitarios. Todo para que? Para que respondan como automatas? Para que esten hartos de la escuela al llegar al cuarto a/no?
O sea. Expliquenme como beneficia a un nene que un papa este dos dias buscando un journal cientifico a nivel universitario para explicar un experimento entretenido de ciencia. O sea, esta amiga de mi hermana tiene un experimento cool para el nene, con quimicos y huevos...el concepto: el caparazon es una estructura caliza que se afecta con acidos o causticas se pierde en buscar ciencia en libros. En estos casos se aprende de mezclar baches...
Yo no tuve que buscar journals de ciencia para que alguien me dijera que el cloro y la amonia no se podian mezclar. Solo basto que el envase dijera que no se podia para yo ver como al mezclar se calentaba el envase y generaba gas cloro (*bua ja ja ja), o no necesitaba ver articulos de BLEVE o de bomberos para saber como hacer una bazooka de latas de refresco pegados con tape (*que buenos eran! que duro sonaban).
Sin embargo, a traves del juego, y preguntandole a los que sabian aprendi conceptos que aun hoy aplico hoy en dia como ingeniero ambiental.

Con el cierre de Borders en Plaza Las Americas comienzo a analizar sitios que cerraron y que me gustaban un monton. Personalmente me encantaba un local que vendia articulos egipcios e inciensos en el primer piso de lo que era Gonzalez Padin.
De vez, me gustaba andareguear por los pulgueros que abrieron en el segundo piso del Antiguo Gonzalez Padin. Mucho antes de abrir el Old Navy. Habian entre los locales un local de curiosidades que incluia la venta de 'ecosistemas en un globo'. Una grata curiosidad, pero que nunca quise gastar $50 en uno...

Era curioso en el sentido de que era un globo sellado que tenia una planta, uno o dos camaroncitos y algo de aire. El unico ente externo era la luz solar y el calor transferido del cuarto. El sistema debe ser absolutamente independiente del exterior. La planta se alimenta de los contaminantes generados por los camarones, los camarones comen de la planta. La planta convierte el CO2 a O2.

After witnessing the image of a mosquito magnified in a laser beam outside, I decided to investigate the phenomenon further. I started by locating scuzzy water. Ponds lacking, I decided to take water out of the bowl of my 6 year old spider plant. I then proceeded to fill a syringe and hung it above a laser so that a drop of water, almost ready to fall, was in the beam path. Below is the incredibly complex apparatus involving a book, sticky-tac, a random bottle, a 250mW laser, and a plastic syringe. Glass ones don't work too well; it's had to get the drop of water to not fall.

When I turned it on and looked at the wall, I shat brix. A picture wouldn't do justice to show what I saw. There were paramecia, eating, swimming, fighting. It wasn't in great detail due to diffraction and other light artifacts, yet it was still awesome. If a picture is worth a thousand words, then a video is worth a million.

Los estudiantes de Ingeniería Química y Mecánica del Recinto de Mayagüez de la Universidad de Puerto Rico (RUM), dominaron a las mejores universidades de Estados Unidos durante presentación de sus proyectos en la undécima conferencia nacional de la American Institute of Chemical Engineers, que se llevó a cabo en Minneapolis, Minnesota.
‘El Coki Racing Team’, como se hacen llamar el grupo de 6 estudiantes, ganaron cuatro premios el pasado domingo, 16 de octubre, al presentar un carrito diseñado para correr y parar a cierta distancia por una reacción química.
“En la competencia hay diferentes universidades y todos tienen que hacer que el carrito corra y pare de acuerdo a una reacción química. El nuestro fue el más cerca que llegó de la meta”, precisó Patricia Alvarado Santiago, una de las estudiantes que acompaña al grupo en su jornada.
Entre los cuatro premios, Puerto Rico ganó el primer lugar en la categoría “Performance”, por el excelente desempeño que tuvo el carrito químico al recorrer 67 pies con con 10 pulgadas de los 68 pies establecidos como meta y dejar en desventaja a las demás universidades.
Asimismo, fueron premiados en segundo lugar del ‘Poster Competition’, en el que presentaron las funcionalidades escritas del proyecto. También ganaron la categoría ‘Most Creative Drive System Award’ por ser los únicos competidores en utilizar una misma reacción química para hacer que el carrito corriera y parara.
El equipo de los colegiales fue el más apoyado por el público, por lo que se les otorgó además el ‘Spirit of the Competition Award’.
"Ahora queda esperar a la competencia mundial en el 2013 en Corea del Sur para saber quién se lleva el premio. Por el momento seguimos compitiendo y haciéndole modificaciones al carrito para mejorar nuestras marcas”, concluyó Diego Rosso, capitán del equipo.

Esta descripcion del vehiculo fue data en una entrevista difundida por UNIVERSIA en Mayo 2011:

No voy a repetir mas mi mantra. El sistema de la AMA no sirve desde hace a/nos. Cada dia esta peor. Entonces los unionados deciden irse a una huelga indefinida...Me he tenido que chupar dos fines de semana en mi Toyapie GT...

Mi opinion. Que se queden huelgueando. El servicio es tan pesimo que en realidad no hace gran diferencia. He sabido esperar sobre 2 horas por una Metrobus 2 o una hora por una C30 que no sueltan porque el chofer esta en break y la gente mojandose bajo la lluvia como perros. Que los choferes de guaguas publicas o desempleados con carros hagan esa funcion. Nos ahorramos un monton de esa manera y que el libre mercado marque la disponibilidad. Estoy seguro que no seran tan malcriados...

Aunque, en una pisicorre que tome en la Avenida Escorial los otros dias rotulaba en la compuerta de una gaveta: 'Cabron, aqui no se guardan chavos. So bestia!' (10/14/11 - Tenia que incluir la foto...)

Comente recientemente que he comenzado a releer textos viejos que tenia en el olvido. Tropece entre ellos con la serie de L'Incal dibujado por Moebius y escrito por Alejandro Jodorowsky. Asi que buscando clips de una version animada en preproduccion que nunca se hizo para llevar al cine la historia tropece con esta otra historia de Moebius titulada Sur L'etoile (Sobre la Estrella). No es animada, pero se basa en las imagenes de su historia. Definitivamente Moebius hace grandes composiciones futuristas...

L'Incal fue una serie francesa de 1980 - 1988 dividida en 6 libros. La version que lei recientemente fue una adaptacion que hizo DC para Estados Unidos combinada en tres tomos. Excelente historia, gran arte, excelente guion. Lo unico, es profundamente esoterico, asi que ya han sido advertidos...

They Think We're the Enemy

So far, except for the issue of genetics and eugenics, surprisingly many of the advancements in modern medicine and technology are compatible with Catholicism. Unfortunately, many of their more radical proponents don't feel the same way. In fact, several notable and opinion-leading transhumanists are strongly anti-Christian.

For example, prominent transhumanist William Sims Bainbridge, the author of more than 15 books and numerous magazine and journal articles, opens an article with the following abstract: "Cognitive science immediately threatens religious faith in two ways, by explaining away religion as an error resulting from accidents in the evolutionary history of the human nervous system, and by failing to find evidence that humans possess souls. Over the coming decades, information technology may undercut people's need for religion by offering practical forms of cyberimmortality (CI). The plausibility of religion may also be eroded by the coming unification of science and the associated convergence of [new] technologies."

Even more troubling is language on the Web site for the Future Technologies Advisory Group (www.futuretag.net), a transhumanist organization specializing in consulting and media: "While one of the objectives of the firm will be facilitating the penetration of transhumanist ideas in mainstream business and policy, we will not use the T word or insist on the transhumanist worldview too explicitly. Rather, we will focus on delivering practical advice appropriate to the intended audience." The willingness expressed here to dissemble their true intentions is disconcerting.

And yet there must be open and honest dialogue on these issues. "We are moving way beyond these old challenges to human life," argues Cameron, who says we need to change our focus of attention. We need to "ask the right questions" and work toward finding ethical answers -- answers consistent with the Catholic moral tradition -- before the future arrives.

Lines of communication need to be opened between Christian bioethicists and transhumanists. Cameron, for example, calls Kurzweil "a man of genius" and "no mere academic theorist," while Kurzweil makes the surprising statement that through human-driven evolution, people can "grow exponentially in intelligence, knowledge, creativity, beauty, and love, all of the qualities people ascribe to God without limit," implying that "we can view evolution as a spiritual process, moving ever closer to this ideal." Men of this intellectual stature need forums in which they can communicate with each other. (To be fair, Cameron is already in contact with WTA president Nick Bostrom and others, but he's one of the only pro-life leaders doing so.)

Bloch writes that when transhumanist goals have been achieved, "Many of humanity's ills will be eliminated. I find that sufficient comfort in the continuing march from lives which are nasty, brutal, and short to those which are not quite as nasty, not as brutal, and hopefully longer." Statements like this illustrate that many in this movement simply want a better future -- an excellent starting point for dialogue.

Catholic journalists need to be aware of the underlying agendas in some of these scientific movements (www.bioethics.com, co-edited by Eppinette, is an excellent source for keeping up-to-date). Pro-life politicians and lobbying groups need to stay attuned to scientific progress to know which technologies to support, which to oppose, and which to treat with a laissez-faire attitude of benign neglect. (A good starting point is the 2003 government report "Beyond Therapy: Biotechnology and the Pursuit of Happiness," available at bioethics.gov/reports/beyondtherapy/.) And bioethicists need to start asking the right questions.

Eppinette advises us that, "for people of faith, and Christians in particular, we know that technology is not to be our God, and technology is most definitely not our Savior. Each of us has to examine the role of technology in our own lives, and how it squares with what we consider to be most important in life. This does not mean that we become luddites, rejecting new forms of technology. Si a esta etapa no se han dado cuenta atravieso un proceso de separacion bastante agrio. Entre otras actividades me he dedicado a releer novelas graficas e incluso he estado comprando varias nuevas. He encontrado especialmente reconfortantes historias autobiograficas.
Recientemente he estado sorprendido por el gran trabajo grafico que hizo Craig Thompson en su novela Blankets, la historia de su primer amor. Ahora trabaja una nueva novela que sale en septiembre 2011, llamada Habibi. Y lo que se ve hasta ahora es impresionante.

Representaciones para simplificar computos. El arte de utilizar slide rules y otros tipos de nomogramas era critico en una era para tener que evitar largos computos para llegar a un resultado. Eran excelentes herramientas y un reflejo del ingenio de las matematicas y la ingenieria.

Todavia las utilizamos mucho en la ingenieria para hacer computos de varios pasos leyendo una grafica. Digo, no todas son como estas correlaciones matematicas basadas en gangsta rap:

Nomography, truly a forgotten art, is the graphical representation of mathematical relationships or laws (the Greek word for law is nomos). These graphs are variously called nomograms (the term used here), nomographs, alignment charts, and abacs. This area of practical and theoretical mathematics was invented in 1880 by Philbert Maurice d’Ocagne (1862-1938) and used extensively for many years to provide engineers with fast graphical calculations of complicated formulas to a practical precision.

A few months ago, I was contacted by the ad agency DDB Berlin to illustrate a calendar for Entega, a German ecological energy company. Zwölf Märchen aus der Welt der Energie (Twelve Tales from the Wolrd of Energy) includes twelve unique fables based on green energy for each month.

Sorry for the length of this post but this job was really intense. The deadline was short and I dedicated about a month and a half to this project. I really feel like this is a very important subject and I wanted to do it justice. As I sit in my overheated NYC apartment (gas powered steam boiler), it seems like Germany really has a head start on the world when it comes to using green energy.

[194] Theoretical Movie Review - Wings of Desire

Let's call this a theoretical movie review. Instead of telling you to watch a movie, I'll see the reviews made of a movie that I found out by chance and that strikes my fancy as something worth seeing. I usually do this sort of thing on a more shallow level. I don't just go to any movie on the theater, unless it is a guilty pleasure. Foreign cinema. It is not only Almodovar, it is not only sex, it is not only 'Alternative Movoes' for gays, there is a whole array of genres that we just miss out on. There is not really a market for this type of cinema in Puerto Rico (unless you buy them at Specs or Borders).

Going back to the exercise. I choose a movie and research it. It then becomes a welcome surprise when I discover that my choice was correct. The premise is that I have a hunch and it turns out to be correct and it is possible to fall in love with something that you have not even seen yet. I can think on some recent analogies, but I rather ignore them at this time. Let's just say it is possible to fall in love with the idea of falling in love.

Well....Wings of Desire is one of those cases. It is a german film of angels on Earth.

The search. It always is the chase, isn't it? I fell in love with two songs from U2 and Nick Cave. I was not aware that they were correlated. The videos are presented below:

The Premise: On the most basic level, the plot consists of no more than “angel meets girl; angel gets girl.” The angels in Wings of Desire are ethereal beings that resemble humans in appearance -- other than sometimes sporting visible wings. These earthbound angels have existed from primordial times. Hovering overhead, perched atop tall buildings, or walking among us, they commingle with human society unnoticed except occasionally by a child. The capacity of some children to see the angels apparently relates to their incomplete development of consciousness of self:

And all life was one.

The job of these vicarious viewers is to observe, collect, testify, and preserve. They hear excerpts from the interior monologues in the minds of humans – the contemplative or spiritual parts of their thought strands but not the mundane segments. They see, in black-and-white, and hear but have no tactile, olfactory, or gustatory sensations. They cannot intervene in the physical universe of humans, but can exert subtle psychological influences such as consoling or stirring feelings of hope or optimism. They dress in gray flannel trench coats and scarves, and wear their hair back in ponytails. Two angels in particular are central to the story: Damiel (Bruno Ganz) and Cassiel (Otto Sander).

Damiel feels a restive dissatisfaction with his lot. “It’s great to live only by the spirit, to testify day by day for eternity only to the spiritual side of people. But sometimes I get fed up with my spiritual existence. Instead of forever hovering above, I’d like to feel there’s some weight on me, to end my eternity and bind me to earth. At each step, each gust of wind, I’d like to be able to say, ‘Now, now and now’, and no longer say, ‘since always’ and ‘forever.’ To sit in the empty seat at the card table and be greeted, if only by a nod.”

Bit by bit, Damiel moves closer to a monumental decision to choose human existence. Two main influences propel him from yearning to action. First, he meets and falls in love with Marion (Solveig Dommartin), a trapeze artist, who soars under the big top with wings of her own and joie de vie. Second, he encounters an American actor, Peter Falk, playing himself (more or less), who relishes every little sensual experience of life, from the fit of a hat to a hot cup of coffee. Ultimately, Damiel chooses to fall literally from grace and to meet Marion face to face as a fellow human being.

The Themes: Wings of Desire manages the extraordinary feat of integrating primal issues pertaining to metaphysics, mental process, history, politics, and cinema. The thread that binds all together is the concept of duality. Wings of Desire is an exploration of opposites. At the metaphysical level, the duality examined is essentially the dualism of Descartes. Descartes postulated two distinct though interactive planes of reality: a spiritual domain, including subjective mental experience, and the physical universe, including the human body. Damiel and Cassiel exist in Descartes’ spiritual universe, which intersects with only the spiritual side of human existence – with the profound thoughts of people. On the other hand, the angels lack most of the modalities of perception – touch, taste, smell, and color vision (there is an inconsistency in the angels even possessing the senses of black-and-white vision and hearing, but without this inconsistency there could be no film!) and they cannot impact the physical world. Humans, by contrast have the full range of sensory and motor interaction with the physical universe but are oblivious to the spiritual universe, except for that one isolated chunk of it which is each person’s consciousness. Each person’s own subjective mind, in this dualism, is an island of the spiritual universe that has been ripped into existential isolation by the gift of sensory perception. Damiel can choose one side of the wall of existence or the other, but not both. If he falls to earth, he can gain individual identity, the full range of sensuality, and a sense of “now”, but will lose his awareness of the spiritual domain in its fullness, access to the spiritual thoughts of other people, and his existence in eternity. He can choose to observe as an angel or to be as a human being.

The delicacy of insight in Wings of Desire is at its very finest when exploring the duality of mental process. The mind is designed to create an abstract representation of the physical universe. The human mind functions as an observer of the world in which it exists (in largely that same sense that a movie watcher is an observer of the world that was created in film). By the experience of consciousness, we become spectators of the universe. A duality is created in the process, which we recognize as self and not-self -- in the words of Martin Buber. The only thing of which any person has direct experience is their own internal, subjective mental experience. All else is known only by reflection. Unlike the angels, we can never have direct access to the thoughts of another person (except in literature or film by the agency of a narrator, which is part of the beauty of such works of art). We can observe the behavior of others and, from that, try to surmise their feelings or thoughts, but we can never directly touch their internal mental life. This impenetrable wall of separation is what is sometimes referred to as existential isolation (or existential loneliness). I am always amazed when I read a review of Wings of Desire in which a reviewer complains that the scenes in which the angels listen to human thoughts are boring or move too slowly. After living a lifetime never enjoying direct knowledge of another person’s thoughts, how could one tire of the experience so quickly?

The film evokes a mood of reverie, elegy and meditation. It doesn't rush headlong into plot, but has the patience of its angels. It suggests what it would be like to see everything but not participate in it. We follow two angels: Damiel (Bruno Ganz) and Cassiel (Otto Sander). They listen to the thoughts of an old Holocaust victim, and of parents worried about their son, and of the passengers on trams and the people in the streets; it's like turning the dial and hearing snatches of many radio programs. They make notes about the hooker who hopes to earn enough money to go south, and the circus aerialist who fears that she will fall, because it is the night of the full moon.
You're seduced into the spell of this movie, made in 1987 by Wenders, who collaborated on the screenplay with the German playwright Peter Handke. It moves slowly, but you don't grow impatient, because there is no plot to speak of, and so you don't fret that it should move to its next predictable stage. It is about being, not doing. And then it falls into the world of doing, when the angel Damiel decides that he must become human.
He falls in love with the trapeze artist. He goes night after night to the shabby little circus where she performs above the center ring. He is touched by her doubts and vulnerability. He talks with Cassiel, the other angel, about how it would feel to feel: to be able to feed a cat, or get ink from a newspaper on your fingers. He senses a certain sympathy from one of the humans he watches, an American movie actor (Peter Falk, playing himself). "I can't see you, but I know you're here," Falk tells him. How can Falk sense him? Sometimes children can see angels, but adults are supposed to have lost the facility.
The answers to these questions are all made explicitly clear, in the new Hollywood movie "City of Angels," which is a remake of "Wings of Desire" and spells out what the original film only implies. After seeing the new film, which stars Nicolas Cage as the angel and Meg Ryan as the woman (now a heart surgeon rather than an aerialist), I went back to "Wings of Desire" again. It reminded me of the different notes that movies can strike.
"City of Angels" is a skillful romantic comedy and I enjoyed it, but it all stayed there on the screen, content to be what it was. "Wings of Desire" doesn't release its tension in a smooth plot payoff. It creates a mood of sadness and isolation, of yearning, of the transience of earthly things. If the human being is the only animal that knows it lives in time, the movie is about that knowledge.
It is a beautiful film, photographed by the legendary cinematographer Henri Alekan, who made the characters float weightlessly in Cocteau's "Beauty and the Beast" (the circus in the movie is named after him). When he shows the point of view of the angels, he shoots in a kind of blue-tinted monochrome. When he sees through human eyes, he shoots in color. His camera seems liberated from gravity; it floats over the city, or glides down the aisle of an airplane. It does not intrude; it observes. When the angel follows the trapeze artist into a rock club, it doesn't fall into faster cutting rhythms; it remains detached. The critic Bryant Frazer observes that Cassiel, the other angel, "leans against the wall and closes his eyes, and the stage lights cast three different shadows off his body, alternating and shifting position and color as though we're watching Cassiel's very essence fragmenting before our eyes."
