[334] A Cada Santo Una Vela

Asi he estado estos pasados dias.

Resistir.  Deseo de vivir.

Queremos emular esos ejemplos.

http://sferrerobravo.wordpress.com/2009/04/28/falsas-estadisticas/

https://medium.com/thoughtful-design/c23c5fb86266
“We worry about sounds that sound unpleasant or like it’s breaking,” says Gordon. This is especially true for noises originating from ‘user-actuated events’, moments when the car makes a sound because of something you did, like clicking buttons, moving levers, or opening and closing doors. “The Impala has a wonderful [dashboard] display that moves out of the way,” she says. “We spent a good deal of time tuning that noise to sound just right.”
In the case of the Impala, it’s a luxury car, so GM was going for ‘comfort’ and best-in-class quietness. That said, they didn’t want to completely silence the engine. “We want you to still know that you’ve got a v6 underneath the hood,” says Gordon. “We want people to say, ‘Wow that engine sounds powerful but far away, and it sounds like it’s doing its job like it’s supposed to.’”

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-1272218/Silent-electric-cars-Star-Wars-sound-effects-warn-pedestrians-coming.html

bah, cierro aqui.  Luego otros temas...

[314] In The Future When All Is Well

So be it.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Corto_Maltese
Corto Maltese (whose name is possibly derived from the Venetian Corte Maltese - Courtyard of the Maltese, today Corte Contarini del Bovolo, next to Palazzo Contarini del Bovolo) is a laconic sea captain adventuring during the early 20th century (1900-1920s). A "rogue with a heart of gold", he is tolerant and sympathetic to the underdog. Born in Valletta on July 10, 1887, he is a son of a British sailor from Cornwall and a gypsy Andalusian witch and prostitute known as "La Niña de Gibraltar". As a boy growing up in the Jewish quarter of Córdoba, Maltese discovered that he had no fate line on his palm and therefore carved his own with a razor, determining that his fate was his to choose. Although maintaining a neutral position, Corto instinctively supports the disadvantaged and oppressed. Corto Maltese's character is based on a famous Polish adventurer, author and explorer Ossendowski, who collaborated among others with Ungern von Sternberg.
The character embodies the author's skepticism of national, ideological, and religious assertions. Corto befriends people from all walks of life, including the murderous Russian Rasputin (no relation with the historical figure, apart from physical resemblance and some character traits), British heir Tristan Bantam, Voodoo priestess Gold Mouth and Czech academic Jeremiah Steiner. He also knows and meets various real-life historical figures, including Jack London, Ernest Hemingway, Hermann Hesse, Butch Cassidy, James Joyce, Gabriele D'Annunzio, Frederick Rolfe, Joseph Conrad, Sukhbaatar, John Reed, White Russian general Roman Ungern von Sternberg, Enver Pashaof Turkey and Sergei Semenov, modelled after Grigory Semyonov. His acquaintances treat him with great respect, as when a telephone call to Joseph Stalin frees him from arrest when he is threatened with execution on the border of Turkey and Armenia.

http://philosophyofscienceportal.blogspot.com/2012/09/procrastinationguilty-as-charged.html
Procrastinators have a reputation as loafers, laggards and lollygaggers. A bit harsh, believes University of California, Riverside philosopher John Perry, a self-described procrastinator who asserts that, unlike their reputation, most people who excel at postponing the inevitable actually lead productive lives by busying themselves with many tasks to avoid others deemed more onerous.

Perry calls it structured procrastination, a strategy of completing less-important tasks to avoid those higher on an individual’s priority list. He has written an entertaining, philosophical self-help book for procrastinators, “The Art of Procrastination, A Guide to Effective Dawdling, Lollygagging and Postponing,” which was published in August by Workman Publishing.

Structured procrastination can convert procrastinators into “effective human beings, respected and admired for all that they can accomplish and the good use they make of their time,” he says.

“You can be a procrastinator and still get a lot of work done,” says Perry, whose 1995 essay articulating a theory of structured procrastination continues to be a top hit on Google searches.

[262] When We Were Young

Comienzo a viajar a Brooklyn, Queens, Bayamon, Naranjito.

Me explico.

[252] Vintage Comics - Son of God

Estoy emocionalmente drenado.

http://vigilantcitizen.com/latestnews/how-companies-learn-your-secrets/

How Companies Learn Your Secrets

Andrew Pole had just started working as a statistician for Target in 2002, when two colleagues from the marketing department stopped by his desk to ask an odd question: “If we wanted to figure out if a customer is pregnant, even if she didn’t want us to know, can you do that? ”
Pole has a master’s degree in statistics and another in economics, and has been obsessed with the intersection of data and human behavior most of his life. His parents were teachers in North Dakota, and while other kids were going to 4-H, Pole was doing algebra and writing computer programs. “The stereotype of a math nerd is true,” he told me when I spoke with him last year. “I kind of like going out and evangelizing analytics.”
As the marketers explained to Pole – and as Pole later explained to me, back when we were still speaking and before Target told him to stop – new parents are a retailer’s holy grail. Most shoppers don’t buy everything they need at one store. Instead, they buy groceries at the grocery store and toys at the toy store, and they visit Target only when they need certain items they associate with Target – cleaning supplies, say, or new socks or a six-month supply of toilet paper. But Target sells everything from milk to stuffed animals to lawn furniture to electronics, so one of the company’s primary goals is convincing customers that the only store they need is Target. But it’s a tough message to get across, even with the most ingenious ad campaigns, because once consumers’ shopping habits are ingrained, it’s incredibly difficult to change them.
There are, however, some brief periods in a person’s life when old routines fall apart and buying habits are suddenly in flux. One of those moments – the moment, really – is right around the birth of a child, when parents are exhausted and overwhelmed and their shopping patterns and brand loyalties are up for grabs. But as Target’s marketers explained to Pole, timing is everything. Because birth records are usually public, the moment a couple have a new baby, they are almost instantaneously barraged with offers and incentives and advertisements from all sorts of companies. Which means that the key is to reach them earlier, before any other retailers know a baby is on the way. Specifically, the marketers said they wanted to send specially designed ads to women in their second trimester, which is when most expectant mothers begin buying all sorts of new things, like prenatal vitamins and maternity clothing. “Can you give us a list?” the marketers asked.

[248] Beautiful Day Without You

I really had no idea on where to direct this article.  I have 20+ pages of backlinks waiting to be included in many subjects.  But they are just that...raw backlinks.  Worthless without an analysis.  So instead of dumping links on you I will build up on the previous article, where I basically indicate that I used to live in a sick system that I could not break out of...all in the name of love.

And then switch it to the death of Moebius, a sad news I received Saturday morning on my Android...
Moebius has died

Won't add much with the exception that he is my idol and mentor, as is the case of most science fiction artists and conceptual developers.  May he lie in Heaven with other greats such as Frank Franzetta or Jack Kirby...Let others give him reverence:

In case I had not post it before, a tumblr with some of his artwork:
He was in charge of some of the visual effects on the original Tron.  This includes the stunning Solar Glider, one of the best scenes of the original movie.
his webpage:

I'm just imagining how greath would that Dune production had been if the combined work of Moebius, Jodorowsky and HR Giger would have reached the theaters:

or if that Willow production had gotten his way...
Anecdotes...

Then, wishing they actually made that TV series based upon his work on L'Incal:

http://verabee.com/wolf/

http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Teor%C3%ADa_de_las_Ventanas_Rotas
http://www.elpais.com/articulo/cataluna/teoria/ventanas/rotas/elpepiautcat/20041018elpcat_7/Tes

http://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/1982/03/broken-windows/4465/?single_page=true

One way to stretch limited police resources is being tried in some public housing projects. Tenant organizations hire off-duty police officers for patrol work in their buildings. The costs are not high (at least not per resident), the officer likes the additional income, and the residents feel safer. Such arrangements are probably more successful than hiring private watchmen, and the Newark experiment helps us understand why. A private security guard may deter crime or misconduct by his presence, and he may go to the aid of persons needing help, but he may well not intervene—that is, control or drive away—someone challenging community standards. Being a sworn officer—a "real cop"—seems to give one the confidence, the sense of duty, and the aura of authority necessary to perform this difficult task.
Patrol officers might be encouraged to go to and from duty stations on public transportation and, while on the bus or subway car, enforce rules about smoking, drinking, disorderly conduct, and the like. The enforcement need involve nothing more than ejecting the offender (the offense, after all, is not one with which a booking officer or a judge wishes to be bothered). Perhaps the random but relentless maintenance of standards on buses would lead to conditions on buses that approximate the level of civility we now take for granted on airplanes.

[171] Dead Seed Scrolls P 01 - P 04

Por tal razon no he podido escribir realmente nada.

Bueno.

Simple, no?

/No.

Lovelace and Babbage

 http://alcantarillaalquimica.blogspot.com/2011/01/speculative-fiction-01-2205.html

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ada_Lovelace

http://covacha-matematica.blogspot.com/2011/02/sci-valentines-edicion-2011-svm-ii-1114.html

Issue # 1 - I Got My Car Back

Issue # 2 - La AEE Me Tiene a Obscuras

Busco a tientas mi ruta.

Citing Jean-Jacques Rousseau's book Émile, Ekirch suggests that echolocation was one of the best methods: a portable, sonic tool for finding your way through unfamiliar towns or buildings. And it could all be as simple as clapping.

From Émile: "You will perceive by the resonance of the place whether the area is large or small, whether you are in the middle or in a corner." You could then move about that space with a knowledge, however vague, of your surroundings, avoiding the painful edge where space gives way to object. And if you get lost, you can simply clap again. Ekirch goes on to say, however, that "a number of ingenious techniques" were developed in a pre-electrified world for finding one's way through darkness (even across natural landscapes by night). These techniques were "no doubt passed from one generation to another," he adds, implying that there might yet be assembled a catalog of vernacular techniques for navigating darkness. It would be a fascinating thing to read. Some of these techniques, beyond Rousseau and his clapping hands, were material; they included small signs and markers such as "a handmade notch in the wood railing leading to the second floor," allowing you to calculate how many steps lay ahead, as well as backing all furniture up against the walls at night to open clear paths of movement through the household. Entire, community-wide children's games were also devised so that everyone growing up in a village could become intimately familiar with the local landscape.

Games like "Round and Round the Village," popular in much of England, familiarized children at an early age to their physical surroundings, as did fishing, collecting herbs, and running errands. Schooled by adults in night's perils, children learned to negotiate the landscapes "as a rabbit knows his burrow"—careful after dark to skirt ponds, wells, and other hazardous terrain. In towns and cities, shop signs, doorways, and back alleys afforded fixed landmarks for neighborhood youths.Incredibly, Ekirch points out, "Only during the winter, in the event of a heavy snowfall, could surroundings lose their familiarity, despite the advantage to travels of a lighter, more visible landscape." The mnemonic presence of well-known community landmarks has been replaced by what mammoth calls a "whitesward." But this idea, so incredibly basic, that children's games could actually function as pedagogic tools—immersive geographic lessons—so that kids might learn how to prepare for the coming night, is an amazing one, and I have to wonder what games today might serve a similar function. Earthquake-preparedness drills?

"Wired reports that with just a few weeks of training, you can learn to 'see' objects in the dark using echolocation the same way dolphins and bats do. Acoustic expert Juan Antonio Martinez at the University of Alcalá de Henares in Spain has developed a system to teach people how to use echolocation, a skill that could be particularly useful for the blind and for people who work under dark or smoky conditions, like firefighters — or cat burglars. 'Two hours per day for a couple of weeks are enough to distinguish whether you have an object in front of you,' says Martinez. 'Within another couple weeks you can tell the difference between trees and pavement.' To master the art of echolocation, you can begin by making the typical 'sh' sound used to make someone be quiet. Moving a pen in front of the mouth can be noticed right away similar to the phenomenon when traveling in a car with the windows down, which makes it possible to 'hear' gaps in the verge of the road. The next level is to learn how to master 'palate clicks,' special clicks with your tongue and palate that are better than other sounds because they can be made in a uniform way, work at a lower intensity, and don't get drowned out by ambient noise. With the palate click you can learn to recognize slight changes in the way the clicks sound depending on what objects are nearby. 'For all of us in general, this would be a new way of perceiving the world,' says Martinez."

Several species of animals, most notably bats and dolphins, use their own emitted sounds, along with their auditory systems to perceive and localize objects in their environment. Pulses of emitted sound reflect from objects in the animal's path and may be interpreted by the auditory system, much as refl ected light waves are interpreted by the visual system (16). This ability to localize objects with echoes was termed echolocation by Donald Griffin, who, in 1938, pioneered a breakthrough in the science of auditory perception with his discovery of the ba ts' amazing ability to utilize high-frequency sounds to avoid obstacles (3). Echolocation makes it possible for species to decrease their dependence on the visual system; such independence confers advantages to the echolocator for navigation and huntin g under poor lighting conditions. Echolocation has also been observed in terrestrial mammals, such as rodents, insectivores, Megachiroptera, and in nocturnal cave-dwelling oil birds and cave swiftlets (11). In the past fifty years, research has re vealed that the auditory system is a major tool of perception employed by blind humans.

Similarities of Human and Bat EcholocationBlind and blindfolded sighted human subjects were in fact able to learn to use echolocation to detect objects in their environment (5). Efforts have been made to devise an effective mechanical aid for the blind to improve their auditory perception of obstacles (4).
From 1944 to 1947 the Committee on Sensory Devices of the National Academy of Scien ces developed eighteen different portable devices to aid the blind in avoiding obstacles. Only two performed sufficiently well, but these devices performed analysis on a point-by-point basis. This point-by-point analysis can be compared to a flashlight which "reveals only the small portion of the environment that falls within its scope (18)." Much remains to be learned about the physical properties and cues which affect object perception by the blind.
These issues were addressed by many scientists , including Diderot who, in 1749, recorded his observation that a blind person has the ability to perceive the presence and distance of objects. Since then different theories have been postulated to account for this phenomenon. One theory described obje ct detection through the use of skin sensitivity to temperature or pressure. Another theory offered pressure on the tympanic membrane (which vibrates with sound waves in the inner ear) as the mechanism of detection. Occult theories postulated object det ection through utilization of such phenomena as magnetism, electricity, or a sixth sense. The blind themselves had different interpretations of the mechanism of their perception.

Issue # 3 - Sin Titulo - No Preguntes Simplemente Leelo

A mi me gusto mucho esa serie.

Repito. Sigo vago. Dejo el tema aqui.

Random Stuff

Have been very busy these last few weeks. Therefore I have not been able to post anything new, except the ocassional youtube video on Facebook. Here some interesting finds I have stumbled upon the Web:

# 1 - Stray Bullets

http://www.innocenceofnihilism.com/SBFREEREAD.html

Someone posted the first four issues of this polemic comic at the above listed site. A very pessimistic view of life and with issues that criticize many evils of our society. Reminded me of Visual Arts Bookstore in Condado.

# 2 Nineteenth Century China Tradition

http://www.bc.edu/research/chinagateway/culthist/dianshizhai.html

These short stories presented by Chinese Gatewway provide insight to Chinese Culture on the Nineteenth Century with Dianshizhai Pictorials. These images presented a history or a moral (a dated moral analogous to Victorian England morality).

These vignettes reminded me of Rafael's Tufi/no's excellent series of serigraphy's of the Plena in Puerto Rico. Don't know Tufi/no, here are some of his most known works (Note: AutoPlay Music) including Cortaron a Elena.

#3 - Alternate View of the Water Crisis (Non Crisis)

Everyone gives as a fact that the water will not be available within 20 years and compares water to a fossil fuel. Water cannot be unavailable given the large amount of it, and the effect caused by the water cycle, where seawater is recycled by evaporation and rain. The actual problem is of infrastructure or making the water available at hard to reach areas. These areas are reserved for the poor and helpless, that are always exploited in these issues.

I may not agree with all the points of the writer but he hits hard on the real issues behind the water. Corruption and Unaccounted Water Losses (sounds familiar to PRASA?). Reuse and proper treatment of residual water is critical. That is why a good sewer system is required. Puerto Rico has the opportunity to enter into this market if we switch from primary discharge regional wastewater plants and enter the advanced treatment with nutrient removal systems. This will be discussed on further issues of the Alcantarilla.

Here is the original article, check the presentation and the comments made in favor and against the speaker.
